14-man squad named for trip to Chelmsford

Head Coach Matt Maynard has named a 14-man squad for the trip to Chelmsford to face Essex Eagles (Thursday, 1st July).

Timm van der Gugten is rested and is replaced by the recalled Andrew Salter. Prem Sisodiya is being assessed for an injury by the Glamorgan medical staff today, with Michael Hogan called up as cover for him, should Sisodiya be ruled out.

Sam Pearce is included after making his first team debut on Tuesday against Surrey, and 19-year-old off-spinner Tegid Phillips is called up to his first Glamorgan squad. Phillips has come through the Glamorgan academy pathway, and is currently on the Cardiff UCCE programme.

Glamorgan defeated Surrey by one-run in a dramatic victory at Sophia Gardens, with Timm van der Gugten running out Kyle Jamieson off the final ball to secure victory. Prem Sisodiya took 2/22, with Billy Root (41*) and David Lloyd (41) leading the way with the ball.

In the return fixture, the Welsh county defeated Essex Eagles by seven wickets, with fifties for Nick Selman and Marnus Labuschagne, who are both still missing due to health and safety protocols. Selman is recovering from Coronavirus, having contracted the disease last week, and is feeling better after suffering from flu-like symptoms over the weekend. Labuschagne and Michael Neser will miss the next two Vitality Blast games, but should be out of self-isolation in time for Sunday's County Championship match at Sussex.

View from the camp - Billy Root

"I think we need to keep on building on the win against Surrey. It was a fighting performance against them and if we keep doing that I'm sure more positive results will come our way.

"David and Kiran got us off to a really good start, and they set a good example in how positively they played at the top of the order.

"I thought our fielding was absolutely superb on Tuesday. Some of the work the boys did on the boundary was incredible, we cut off quite a few boundaries and it showed that turning fours into twos in the field was potentially the difference for us.

"It's exciting to see young Welsh talent through the squad - Roman and Prem were great on Tuesday, Sam Pearce had a good debut, Kiran has really developed of late, and Tegid Phillips has loads of potential - and with more experienced guys to learn from like Colin and Cooky, we've got a nice blend going."
