Glamorgan return to red-ball action against Essex

Head coach Matt Maynard has named a 13-man squad as Glamorgan return to LV= Insurance County Championship action against Essex at Sophia Gardens tomorrow.

Maynard takes back the reins from David Harrison who successfully stepped in as head coach for the Welsh county’s Royal London Cup campaign while Maynard was seconded to Welsh Fire.

Club captain Chris Cooke is back to lead the side after missing the 50-over competition for The Hundred, along with vice-captain David Lloyd, seamer Timm van der Gugten and all-rounder Dan Douthwaite

There are three changes to the previous red-ball squad that was selected to face Sussex at Hove in July.

Overseas signing Hamish Rutherford is set to make his County Championship debut for the club, while left-arm seamer Jamie McIlroy returns after recovering from injury and impressing in the second 2nd XI and Lukas Carey is also included after a strong Royal London Cup campaign.

View from the camp – Chris Cooke

“There’s still a lot to play for this season. We’re in division two out of three and there are some really strong sides with us.

“It’s been great to have everyone back and playing together again and playing for the Daff.

“The four-day campaign has been solid so far, aside from a couple of results and if things had gone our way I think we could easily have been in division one based on the cricket we played.

“The next few weeks will be a nice yardstick to measure how far we’ve come as a team.

“We’re probably up against the form red-ball team of the past few years. They’re a strong outfit and it will be an excellent test for us.

“They have a world class spinner, quality seamers and a batting line up that scores big runs but if we play as well as we can we have a great opportunity to turn them over.”

Head-to-head – Glamorgan v Essex

This will be the first time for five years that the two teams have met each other in the Championship with the Welsh county winning their most recent encounter in September 2016 at Chelmsford by 11 runs.
