Essex beat Glamorgan by an innings and 74 runs on the third morning of their LV=Insurance County Championship match at Sophia Gardens after dismissing the Welsh county for 112.

Day 1

Evening Report

Essex began the final session on 44-2 as David Lloyd and Timm van der Gugten resumed the bowling duties. Dan Lawrence square-cut Lloyd for four before clipping van der Gugten to the ropes at fine-leg, but there was little on offer from the two bowlers as they probed away for a further breakthrough.

Dan Douthwaite also had a spell at the River End and was edged to third man by Lawrence before Carey returned at the Cathedral Road End and delivered a couple of maidens until Browne clipped him through mid-wicket for three. The opener continued to quietly accumulate mainly in singles as Andrew Salter also had another spell in tandem with Michael Hogan. Browne completed his patient fifty from 125 balls with another single against Salter. But at the end of the over the umpires took the players off the field for bad light with Essex on 92-2.

Afternoon Update

Glamorgan had reached 59-6 at lunch after a difficult morning’s batting against some high-class seam bowling. However, it was the off-spin of Simon Harmer which started the session with Andrew Salter on-driving him for four before Dan Douthwaite punched him off the back foot through extra-cover. But Harmer had the last laugh as in his next over Salter holed out to long-on as Glmaorgan slipped further to 69-7.

Having been joined by Timm van der Gugten, Douthwaite clipped Harmer to square-leg for four before twice clubbing Jamie Porter through mid-off. But with the total on 86 Harmer bowled the Dutchman as Lukas Carey arrived in the middle and on-drove Shane Snater for four. Douthwaite then cover drove Harmer for another firmly-struck boundary before Carey twice nurdled Snater for four to third man as the hundred, to great applause, came up in the 41st over.

The boundaries continued as Carey pulled Snater for six before Douthwaite again cover-drove Harmer, before flaying him through backward point. Carey then unfurled a sumptuous on-drive to the ropes against Snater. Douthwaite then opened his shoulders to harpoon Harmer to mid-wicket before Carey did the same and sent the ball over the ropes for six.

Their merry spree ended though in the next over as Douthwaite was caught at wide long off as Snater pouched his fifth wicket. He duly ended the innings four balls later as Carey miscued to short third man as Glamorgan ended on 134. Carey was swiftly back in action with the new ball with Michael Hogan but not until Kiran Carlson had been presented with his Glamorgan cap by Matthew Maynard as the team took to the field.

After Nick Browne had clipped Hogan for a pair of fours in the opening over, Carey found the edge of Alastair Cook’s bat with his third delivery as Chris Cooke completed a good tumbling catch behind the stumps. Browne also edged Hogan just short of first slip before Tom Westley nurdled the old warhorse to the ropes at third man.

Browne found the ropes again as he twice straight drove Carey before on-driving him for another boundary. The left-hander then greeted the introduction of van der Gugten into the attack by off-driving his first delivery to the ropes, but the Dutchman struck in his second over as Westley edged him into Cooke’s gloves with Essex on 41-2.

Lunchtime Report

The final month of the first-class season has been dubbed “Super September” by the marketeers as the eighteen counties, having been in three groups for the first part of the summer, have now been arranged into three divisions, based on results from the group stages. Today’s game is in the Second Division, and is also the first in the Championship since the final batch of group games that began on 11th July and saw Glamorgan secure their place in the second tier with a well-earned draw against Northamptonshire at Cardiff, whilst Essex had their game at Derby cancelled after the first day’s place because of an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Derbyshire camp.

Similar issues have also ruled out five Glamorgan players, who are now self-isolating, from possible selection in this contest, including Joe Cooke who made such a favourable with both bat and ball in the Royal London Cup. Consequently, Steve Reingold made his Championship bow along with Hamish Rutherford as Glamorgan opted to bat first after winning the toss with the Kiwi opening the batting with David Lloyd against the Essex new ball pairing of Jamie Porter and Sam Cook.

Rutherford began in positive vein clipping the third ball from Porter to square-leg before off-driving the next to long-off, but Lloyd edged the fourth ball of Cook’s opening over into the slips where Simon Harmer completed a waist-high catch at second slip. 8-1 saw Reingold make his way to the middle and after a single off his legs he cover drove Cook to the ropes. Rutherford also off-drove Porter for another boundary before Reingold punched Cook once again through the covers. Rutherford repeated the stroke in Porter’s next over before welcoming Shane Snater into the attack by clipping successive deliveries to the ropes at square-leg and mid-wicket.

But with the total on 39, Reingold edged Snater to second slip where Harmer completed his second catch, this time much lower than the first. Three balls later it became 39-3 as Essex gained their first bonus point with Billy Root departing l.b.w to the hirsute and Tarzan-esque bowler. With Kiran Carlson joining Rutherford, Harmer entered the attack in the 16th over and was driven square of the wicket and through the covers by the new batsman as Glamorgan reached the 50-mark.

Carlson drove Snater through backward point for four but in the next over, he edged the Zimbabwean to Alastair Cook at first slip.55-4 then became 55-5 as Snater struck again as he bowled Chris Cooke who, on his 100th first-class appearance, was bowled shouldering arms. Next over it became 57-6 as Rutherford was caught at bat-pad to give Harmer his first wicket of the contest.

Day 2

Glamorgan have slumped to 71-6 in their second innings against Essex at the end of the second day of their LV=Insurance County Championship match at Sophia Gardens after the visitors secured a healthy lead on first innings of 186 runs.

Evening Report

With Dan Lawrence returning to the England camp, Paul Walter became a full replacement for the batsman as Glamorgan faced a deficit of 186. They duly made a poor start as Hamish Rutherford departed l.b.w. to the second ball of the innings from Jamie Porter before David Lloyd departed in identical fashion to Sam Cook’s seventh delivery. Billy Root square-cut Cook for four but next over he attempted a quick single only for his partner Steve Reingold to be run out at the striker’s end as Shane Snater made a direct hit at point.

8-3 saw the newly capped Kiran Carlson arrive in the middle with plenty of restorative work to be done and he began with a fluent cover drive against Cook. But Glmaorgan’s plight worsened as next over Porter struck again as Root became the third man to depart leg before with Chris Cooke making his way out from the pavilion with his team on 16-4. He also began with a cover drive before Carlson survived a sharp chance at second slip. But it did not prove to be an expensive miss as two balls later he was bowled by the jubilant Cook.

Cooke then square-drove both Porter and Cook for fours but Snater came on and had an l.b.w. appeal upheld to his third delivery as Dan Douthwaite departed for a single. 29-6 saw Andrew Salter join his captain with Simon Harmer also joining the attack at the Cathedral Road End as the light got murky. Cooke again nurdled Snater for four before driving him through the covers for another boundary to take his team past their lowest total against Essex in first-class cricket - 43 at Neath in 1935 – before Salter cover drove Harmer for four followed by a clip to square-leg against Snater.

Cooke then reverse-swept Harmer for four as the light continued to deteriorate with Tom Westley’s off-spin being employed rather than the seamers, but after another couple of overs, it became darker and the players left the field with Glamorgan on 71-6.

Afternoon Update

The clatter of two wickets in as many overs before the interval meant that Essex began the post-lunch session on 215-5 and a lead of 81 runs with Glamorgan looking to make further inroads after Browne’s departure in Steve Reingold’s first over in first-class cricket. The new ball was six overs away so the off-spinner continued in tandem with Dan Douthwaite and with his third ball he removed Pepper as the debutant made a spectacular catch diving full length and low to his left.

Adam Wheater was joined by Simon Harmer with the former being bowled by a no ball from Douthwaite before cover-driving the all-rounder later in the over, followed by a pull to a long-hop next over. Reingold’s remarkable spell continued as next over he had Harmer caught behind by Chris Cooke as Essex’s stutter continued to 233-7.

But a riposte then began as Wheater cover drive Douthwaite twice in an over before Snater brought up the 250 and a bonus point with a straight six against Reingold. Andrew Salter also returned to the fray as Glamorgan opted against taking the new ball until the 85th over with Michael Hogan and Timm van der Gugten operating in tandem. Snater straight drove and cover drove his fellow Dutchman, before clipping him to fine-leg, whilst Wheater straight drove Hogan for four before inside-edging van der Gugten to long-leg.

Wheater also straight drove Hogan as the ball cannoned off the stumps for four after taking a deflection from Hogan in his follow through with Snater surviving the appeal for run out. The latter then drove van der Gugten for four to long-on as another batting point was secured in the 95th over, before Wheater greeted the return of Carey by cover-driving him. But next over, Carey re-arranged his stumps as the eighth wicket stand ended on 312 and eight runs later, the seamer claimed another victim as Sam Cook departed l.b.w. Next over Snater holed out at long-off against Salter as Essex ended with a lead of 186 runs

Lunchtime Update

Dubbed by the marketeers as "Super September" the closing batch of divisional games began yesterday at Cardiff and with seven of the twelve wickets tumbling on the opening day being taken by Dutch internationals, perhaps the strapline should have been “Geweldig Augustus”, or Amazing August. After Glamorgan had batted first, the Essex attack showed why they have been such a potent force in Championship cricket for the past few years with Shane Snater grabbing the headlines with 6/39 including a spell of 4/4 in 28 balls, before Timm van der Gugten and Lukas Carey added one apiece for Glamorgan before bad light hastened an early finish.

The visitors were just 42 runs in arrears with eight wickets in hand when play resumed, still under a heavy cloud cover with 98 overs in the daily quota and looking this morning to further consolidate on their decent position as Glamorgan’s bowlers looked to counter-attack and thwart Essex’s effort to build a sizeable lead. Michael Hogan and Andrew Salter resumed the bowling duties with Dan Lawrence clipping Hogan through mid-wicket for four. But with the total on 100, Salter’s guile and flight proved to be his undoing as he miscued a drive to Timm van der Gugten at mid-off.

Michael Pepper sparred at his first deliveries from Hogan before Browne flicked the veteran seamer to the ropes at square-leg. With Salter continuing his frugal spell at the Cathedral Road End, van der Gugten replaced Hogan at the River End, before Salter yielded his first boundary in his 13th over as Pepper swept him to backward square-leg before later in the over lofting him over long-off for six. He then turned his attention to the Dutchman as he nurdled him to the vacant third man boundary before twice dispatching him through the covers as the arrears were written off.

Browne then pulled Salter for four before, on 67, being dropped at slip as he edged van der Gugten. He celebrated his good fortune by clipping the next ball to the ropes at square-leg before Pepper drove Salter, as well as Lukas Carey, through the covers for another firmly struck four. Browne also dabbed Carey through point for four before flicking him to the ropes at fine-leg. The flurry of fours continued as Pepper drilled Salter through the covers before Dan Douthwaite replaced him shortly before lunch and was on-driven by Browne who then drove the next delivery through extra-cover for another boundary.

Pepper then cover-drove Douthwaite en route to completing a 75-ball fifty before later in the over Browne reached his hundred from 219 balls and brought up the 200 by driving the all-rounder to long-off. But next over he swept Reingold's sixth delivery straight to Douthwaite at deep backward square-leg before Josh Rymell departed l.b.w. in Douthwaite's next over.

Day 3

Essex beat Glamorgan by an innings and 74 runs on the third morning of their LV=Insurance County Championship match at Sophia Gardens after dismissing the Welsh county for 112.

Lunchtime Update

A fortnight ago it was Glamorgan’s players who were celebrating at Cardiff after their five-wicket victory over Essex in the Royal London Cup semi-final. But it was the visitors who had broad smiles on their faces this morning as they were on the cusp of a comprehensive win over the Welsh county with the home side starting the morning on 71-6, still 115 runs in arrears and almost 200 overs remaining in the contest.

Having faced a diet of spin in the gloom last evening, Chris Cooke and Andrew Salter faced the seam bowling of Sam Cook and Jamie Porter. The latter struck with his second delivery as Salter was bowled before Timm van der Gugten edged the seamer through the slips for four. However, in Cook’s next over he feathered a lifting delivery into Adam Wheater’s gloves. Lukas Carey flicked Porter to fine-leg for four before defiantly clubbing him to mid-wicket and third man for further boundaries.

Carey then pulled Cook for six before drilling him through mid-off for another rasping four, followed by a lofted cover drive to the boards in front of the pavilion. But his merry spree ended as he drilled Cook to Josh Rymell at mid-on before Hogan was bowled next delivery leaving Cooke unbeaten on 47 as the game ended after 32 minutes this morning
