Glmaorgan v Surrey RLODC

Andrew Salter took a career-best 3/37 and Hamish Rutherford scored 58 as Glamorgan beat Surrey by five wickets after dismissing the visitors for a meagre 132 in their Royal London One-Day Cup contest at Sophia Gardens.

Surrey had opted to bat first with a team missing 16 players owing to commitments with The Hundred franchises, England call-ups, injury and illness. Glamorgan were unchanged from the side which was named for the washout at Derby last week with Michael Hogan who currently is the joint leading wicket-taker in the One-Day Cup and heading the bowling averages with 9 wickets at 9.49 runs apiece, made an immediate impact as Mark Stoneman edged his first delivery into the safe hands of Nick Selman at second slip. Ryan Patel responded by twice cover-driving Lukas Carey for four before pulling Hogan to square-leg.

Kiran Carlson nearly pulled off a fine catch, diving to his left at mid-on o catch Amla as he on-drove Carey who next ball saw Patel edge just over the head of the slips, but the batter then edged the next delivery to Selman at first clip as Surrey lost their second wicket on 27. Two overs and three runs later, Carey struck again as Amla edged into Tom Cullen’s gloves. With the total on 35, the wicket-keeper claimed his second catch as Jamie Smith edged Joe Cooke’s third delivery.

Nico Reifer then became the next man to depart as – with Surrey on 39 - he miscued a drive against Andrew salter into Hamish Rutherford’s hands at mid-off. Tim David, who has played for Singapore in IT20’s as well as appearing in the Big Bash, announced his arrival by pulling Cooke for four before Clarke brought up the fifty with a sumptuous on-drive against the same bowler.

David then swept Salter for four but with the total on 63 he became the next man to hole out against salter as he miscued an on-drive with Selman pouching the skier. Clarke responded by lofting Salter over mid-off for four before Nick Kimber twice did the same to long-on, followed by a clip to fine-leg. But with the total on 91 he departed l.b.w. to the spinner.

Clarke responded by carving Andrew Gorvin for four through backward point but two overs later he miscued a drive to Billy Root at deep extra-cover as Surrey plummeted further to 97-8. Connor McKerr clubbed some lusty singles before Dan Moriarty clipped Steve Reingold for four but, later in the over, he was bowled by the off-spinner. McKerr and Matt Dunn then secured a series of singles, some of which just avoided a run out, before McKerr edged Cooke into Cullen’s gloves with the visitors all out in the 45th over.

Needing 133 to win, Rutherford and Selman began Glamorgan run chase with the former cover-driving Dunn for a pair of fours. With the total on 17, Selman inside-edged Dunn onto his stumps before Reingold cover drove his first delivery for four. Rutherford then square-drove Clarke for four before clipping Dunn to square-leg. The Kiwi also pulled Clarke for four before Moriarty’s spin was introduced with Reingold also cover-driving his first ball for four.

Rutherford greeted Kimber by dispatching his second delivery through extra-cover before steering him through backward point. Reingold also nurdled Kimber to the ropes at third man, before Rutherford cleverly nurdled Kimber for a trio of fours en route to completing his fifty from 45 balls. Reingold also straight drove Moriarty for four before cover-driving successive balls from David to the ropes as the pair of Glamorgan batsmen looked to improve their net run rate.

Rutherford also swept Moriarty for a massive six to bring up the hundred before miscuing the next ball into the hands of short extra cover. 103-2 then became 110-3 as Carlson was caught behind driving at McKerr before Billy Root twice square-drove the seamer for three and four respectively. With thirteen needed Reingold edged Moriarty into Smith’s gloves as Cullen joined Root who proceeded to upper-cut McKerr for four followed by a square-driven four. A couple of singles followed before Root , with the scores level was caught at slip by Clarke driving at McKerr. Tom Cullen then struck the winning runs with 23.1 overs remaining to give his side an emphatic victory.
