Despite 67 from 41 balls by Ben Kellaway, plus fifties from Sam Northeast, Kiran Carlson and Billy Root, Warwickshire were indebted to 102 by Rob Yates as they won their Metro Bank One-Day Cup match at Neath by 24 runs.
The Welsh county made three changes to their side which defeated Derbyshire on Sunday with Sam Northeast, Timm van der Gugten and Zain ul Hassan returning in place of the injured Colin Ingram, the rested Jamie McIlroy and young seamer Ben Morris. It was therefore van der Gugten who opened the bowling with Harry Podmore as Ed Barnard and Rob Yates began the Warwickshire innings. Barnard struck the first boundary as he cover-drove Podmore, and after a spell of quiet reconnaissance, Yates cut Podmore for four, followed by a flick to fine-leg for another boundary.
Barnard then drove van der Gugten for four before punching ul Hassan off the back foot twice through extra-cover as the visitors reached the 50-mark in the 13th over as Barnard nurdled Andy Gorvin to third man.Kiran Carlson was then swept for four and six by Yates who later in the over nurdled him to third man for four. Barnard then pulled Carlson for six as he completed his fifty from 58 balls, followed by a ramp for four against Gorvin as the 100 came up in the 22nd over.
Barnard also scythed Podmore before Yates straight drove Ben Kellaway prior to reaching his fifty from 74 balls. Barnard then lofted Kellaway for six over long-off before dabbing him through point for four. Yates then straight Kellaway followed by a pull for four against ul Hassan as the opening stand became Warwickshire’s best in List A cricket against Glamorgan, set in 1976 by Dennis Amiss and John Jameson at Coventry. Yates also straight drove Carlson before pulling ul Hassan for four followed by another lofted six plus a sweep for another maximum against Carlson.
The opening stand ended on 188 as Barnard drove ul Hassan to van der Gugten at mid-off as Michael Burgess joined Yates, with the opener reaching his hundred by cutting Carlson - his 110th delivery. But in the previous over, Burgess off-drove Kellaway for four before holing out to mid-wicket. Kellaway then ended Yates’ tenure at the crease as he swept the spinner into Bevan’s hands at deep square-leg.
202-3 saw Ethan Brookes join Will Rhodes and he began by lofting Carlson for six before sweeping Gorvin for four. Rhodes then drove van der Gugten for six over long-on before Brookes swept Gorvin for four followed by a straight-driven six against Kellaway. However, the off-spinner snared him as he drove to long-on where Will Smale, the substitute fielder for the injured Podmore held the catch.
Kai Smith joined Rhodes with the total on 264 and drove Gorvin over extra-cover for six before miscuing to Byrom at backward point. Hamza Shaikh was the next batter and he began with a pair of wristy flicks for four against van der Gugten before Rhodes clipped ul Hassan for six over mid-wicket. Shaikh then clipped ul Hassan over mid-wicket for another six before departing l.b.w.. Rhodes departed in the penultimate over as he miscued Gorvin to point as his team ended on 331-7.
Bevan and Byrom began Glamorgan’s reply as Barnard and Olly Hannon-Dalby shared the new ball. Byrom began with an on-driven four but Bevan departed to Hannon-Dalby’s third delivery as he edged to second slip. Having been joined by Sam Northeast, Byrom off-drove Hannon-Dalby but two balls later he drove the tall bowler into the hands of Barnard at point. 17-2 nearly became 17-3 as Carlson inside-edged his first ball just wide of the out-stretched gloves of wicket-keeper Burgess before celebrating his good fortune with an on-drive for four against Barnard. Northeast did the same later in the over before Carlson square-cut Hannon-Dalby.
Northeast then cover drove Barnard before Carlson drilled Hannon-Dalby to the boards at long-on, followed by a pair of firm pulls to mid-wicket when Craig Miles entered the attack.. Having reached 64-2 at the end of the powerplays, Lintott entered the fray and was reverse-swept for four by Carlson who then on-drove Miles before lofting Lintoo to long-off to complete a combative 50 from 33 balls. He celebrated by off-driving Rhodes when his opposite number replaced Lintott with Northeast, after a nasty blow to his lower abdomen, showed he had recovered by cover-driving Miles.
But with the total on 106, Carlson boundary-laden cameo ended as he edged Miles into the keeper’s gloves and departed for 61, with Billy Root the new batter. Northeast then square-cut Michael Booth for a pair of fours to complete a 62-ball fifty. He then pulled Barnard for four as Root worked the ball around for one’s and two’s before reverse-sweeping Lintott for six. But with the total on 181, Hanno-Dalby returned to the attack and removed Northeast who miscued a pull and was caught by a jubilant Booth.
Kellaway joined Root and began with an on-drive against Booth for four followed by an on-drove for six against the Zimbabwean. The teenager then square-drove Booth for four before being dropped by Booth as he reverse-swept Rhodes. He celebrated by off-driving Rhodes for six before advancing down the wicket to Booth and flaying him for four to long-off. Root also cut him for four as the target became 99 for 14 overs. Kellaway responded by pulling Miles for six before doing the same to Rhodes for four followed by a laconic straight drive for another maximum. But with the total on 261 Root clipped Miled to Smith at deep extra-cover. Having been joined by Horton, Kellaway completed his fifty from 26 balls before ramping Miles for four. Horton then drilled Miles for four to long-on followed by a swat to the ropes at mid-wicket but he was then caught on the mid-wicket boundary swatting Lintott.
284-6 saw ul Hassan join Kellaway with 48 needed off 48 balls, but eight runs later ul Hassan was caught and bowled by Barnard as van der Gugten made his way to the middle and straight drove Barnard for four. But he then was caught by Brookes at mid-wicket as the fielder caught the ball, threw it back it as he stepped back onto the field and completed the catcgh. Three runs later Gorvin was bowled by Hannon-Dalby as the injured Podmore, plus a runner made their way to the middle with 25 needed off 18 balls. But Kellaway lofted Barnard’s next delivery into the hands of Miles at long-on as Warwickshire completed their victory.
