13-man squad named for opening day Yorkshire clash

7 Apr 2021 | Cricket

Head coach Matt Maynard has named a 13-man squad for Glamorgan’s opening LV= County Championship match of the season against Yorkshire at Headingley tomorrow.

It will be the first time Glamorgan have faced Yorkshire on home soil in red-ball cricket since 2012.

Former Durham and Leicestershire all-rounder James Weighell comes straight into the squad after signing a two-year deal with the Welsh county.

He is one of three players who could make their first-class debuts for the Club tomorrow, with overseas player Andy Balbirnie and left-arm seamer Jamie McIlroy the other two.

Glamorgan will be heading into the fixture with confidence following an impressive pre-season performance against Somerset earlier this week. The Welsh county defeated their local rivals by four wickets after successfully chasing down a target of 272 on the final afternoon.

Billy Root will face his brother Joe for the first time since 2017, when the England captain hit Billy for six to secure a win for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire in a one-day match at Trent Bridge. That match remains the only official fixture played with the two brothers on opposing sides.

View from Billy Root:

"Not many of the Glamorgan lads will have played a County Championship game at Headingley and it is a great chance for us to make a good start.

"It's an exciting time of the year for everyone with the championship coming back around, especially this year with last summer being a short season.

"The boys are in good shape and everybody's just ready to get going now. It's looking very exciting for us, especially after the first couple of games outside.

"First and foremost, it will be nice to see Joe. The last time I saw him was September and he has since been away with England in Sri Lanka and India.

"We both will say this is just another game of County Championship cricket and there is a job to be done which is true, but there is a little bit more on it for us personally.

"But while it will be nice to play against Joe, this is not about us. This is a game between Yorkshire and Glamorgan, who we will be representing.

"I am just so proud of the Glamorgan boys for the hard work they've put in this winter and everyone is raring to go."

Billy Root will face brother and England Test captain Joe Root for the first time in the County Championship, while England off-spinner Dom Bess is also included in the Yorkshire squad.

There are a couple of notable absences with Gary Ballance unavailable having suffered from concussion following a freak accident in training. Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan are unavailable, as the pair prepare to compete in the IPL.

“We certainly won’t be going out in that first game thinking, ‘We’re playing a weak Glamorgan team’. They have got some decent players.

“There’s no doubt Billy is a talented player who has done well recently, particularly at Glamorgan. And we will need to get him out early because he can do some damage if not.” - Yorkshire Coach Anthony McGrath on facing Glamorgan, and the upcoming 'Battle of the Root brothers'.
