Glamorgan Cricket is saddened to learn of the recent passing of John Smart, the well-known Cardiff businessman and lifelong supporter of the Club.
The owner of one of Wales’ most successful property companies, John saw his family-owned business develop from its creation in 1973 as a building construction company handling small works into one of the United Kingdom’s most ambitious and successful speculative builders, with a workforce in excess of 100 and contracts with Local authorities, universities, banks and private developers, besides flagship development sites such as Capital Business Park in Wentloog and other key ventures in Cardiff Bay and the City Centre.
Despite his business commitments John maintained a devout passion for Glamorgan County Cricket Club, and was a box-holder at the Sophia Gardens ground in Cardiff. He was ever-present at international and domestic T20 matches and his presence at the ground will be sadly missed.
On hearing of John’s passing, Hugh Morris, CEO of Glamorgan County Cricket Club said: “We were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of John who was a wonderful supporter of Glamorgan Cricket through our good times as well as some of our more challenging periods.
"He was always a popular figure at Sophia Gardens and it is a very sad day for the Club as well as the business community of Cardiff. Our thoughts are with his wife Kathy, Gareth and Alex, and his family at this most difficult time.”
