With rain having steadily fallen ever since 3.30pm, the umpires called off play for the day at 5.30pm

Teatime update

Derbyshire resumed after lunch on 23/0 and Chesney Hughes struck the first boundary of the session as he steered Craig Meschede off the back foot through point. The tall opener also guided Michael Hogan to the vacant ropes at third man but in the fifth over of the session, the Australian made the first incision as he bowled Hughes.

Hamish Rutherford announced his arrival by off-driving Hogan – a stroke his partner Ben Slater repeated in Meschede’s next over. Hogan nearly struck again in his seventh over as Slater edged just short of the slip cordon, but the Australian was not to be deprived for too long as in his next over Rutherford upper cut a short ball straight into the hands of Andrew Salter at third man.

58/2 saw Wayne Madsen arrive in the middle and the floodlights go on as a large bank of dense cloud built-up over the ground. He began by cover driving Graham Wagg, whilst Ben Slater also flicked Timm van der Gugten to fine-leg for four before Madsen clipped the Dutchman to mid-wicket before square-cutting him for another four. The light had started to deteriorate as David Lloyd entered the attack at the City End and after beating the outside edge of both batmen’s bats, he was flicked to fine-leg for four by Slater.

Wagg continued to bowl a probing spell at the Racecourse End but shortly after 3.20pm the overhead conditions had become too gloomy, and the players departed for an early tea.

Lunch Report

There have been many changes to the Derby ground since Glamorgan’s last visit to the Peakites headquarters for a Championship match. Several new structures have been built, together with a series of revamped and enlarged changing rooms, plus a new name – the 3aaa County Ground. The a’s in question refer to the Club’s sponsor and their mantra “Aspire, Achieve and Advance”, with the three words featuring prominently on advertising boards high above the refurbished pavilion.

Will Bragg displayed such qualities yesterday on the opening day of this contest as his career-best efforts helped to lay the foundations for what the visitors hoped would be a sizeable total after they had opted to bat first on a wicket which is expected to assist the spinners later in the game.

Glamorgan duly resumed on 308/6 after bad light had brought an early finish last night, with aspirations of more runs but Luke Fletcher struck with his seventh delivery as he bowled Craig Meschede without addition to the total.

Next over, Graham Wagg edged Tony Palladino to first slip before two overs later Michael Hogan lofted Palladino into the hands of deep mid-off as Glamorgan slipped to 314/9. Andrew Salter used the long handle to swat Palladino to mid-wicket before steering him to third man for three. Timm van der Gugten did the same to garner a four before unleashing a pair of straight drives for four against Palladino as Glamorgan secured a fourth batting point in the 110th over.

Van der Gugten celebrated by hoisting the leg-spin of Critchley high over long-on and deep mid-wicket for a pair of sixes – blows which also brought up the 50 partnership.

He then swatted a long-hop from the leg-spinner for four before edging Wes Durton’s off-spin to slip as the innings ended on 377. The tenth wicket pair had added 63 in fifteen overs andtheir efforts gave Derbyshire half an hour’s batting before lunch.

But after four balls from Hogan a heavy shower fell over the ground, forcing the players off the field for ten minutes. Chesney Hughes struck the first boundary as he clipped Hogan to deep mid-wicket before Ben Slater pulled Wagg to the ropes. Hughes also cover drove Wagg in the final over before lunch
