Glamorgan County Cricket Club is delighted to announce that Billy Root will be staying at the Club for another year.
A popular figure in the changing room and with Glamorgan supporters, he has been an important member of Glamorgan's title winning One-Day Cup teams in 2021 and 2024. In both seasons, he played key innings in helping to guide the Welsh county to the Final of the 50-overs competition, and in the 2024 Metro Bank One Day Cup Final at Trent Bridge, his stand with Sam Northeast helped to give the Glamorgan innings the momentum it needed to reach what proved to be a match-winning total.
Joining Glamorgan in 2019, Root scored a century on his Championship debut at Sophia Gardens. This was followed by two standout innings - a classy 229 against Northamptonshire in the Championship at Wantage Road, and an unbeaten 113 in a 50-over win against Surrey.
With 3,326 First Class, 1,217 List A and 357 T20 runs for the county, Root has also shared in a Club record of 245 for the fourth wicket with Sam Northeast against Worcestershire at New Road in 2022, and, in 2019, a Club record for the eighth wicket in List A cricket alongside Marchant de Lange saw the pair adding an unbeaten 113 against Surrey at Sophia Gardens.
Commenting on extending his time at Glamorgan, Root said: “I’m delighted to be staying at Glamorgan, I’ve really enjoyed my time here over the last six seasons and I feel we’re really close to seeing something special happening at the Club. I’m looking forward to being a part of that.”
Glamorgan Director of Cricket, Mark Wallace added: “Billy has been a quality performer during his time at Glamorgan and it’s great that he’s committed to the Club for next season.
Billy has shown his adaptability and selflessness over the last few seasons, taking up several different roles in the line-up and we look forward to seeing him on the field with us in 2025.”
