Glamorgan’s young home-grown batsmen dominated the day’s play as Kiran Carlson made an unbeaten 106 and Connor Brown 85 with the pair adding 180 for the third wicket as the Welsh county made 331/5 on the opening day of their two-day friendly against Lancashire at The SSE SWALEC.
Evening update
Carlson and Brown resumed after tea with Glamorgan on 190/2 after 68 overs, and the former struck the first boundary of the session, besides bringing up the hundred stand by square driving Stephen Parry to the boards. He then cover drove Lilley for four before again square-driving Parry to the ropes, whilst Brown cover drove Lilley to complete a 120-ball fifty.
Carlson twice cover drove Parry for four before straight driving Lilley for another sweetly timed four, whilst Brown reverse-swept Lilley for three before Lancashire took the new ball after 80 overs with the Welsh county on 257/2. Brown then cover drove the first ball with the new cherry as he Danny Lamb returned to the attack in tandem with Tom Bailey.
Carlson also drilled Lamb through the covers for four before swatting him over the slip cordon for four as he completed a fine hundred from 112 balls. He celebrated next over by steering Lamb through point for four before retiring not out on 106. Aneurin Donald duly replaced him and began with a rasping pull to square-leg against Bailey.
Brown continued to accumulate with some well placed one’s and two’s before drilling Parry for four square of the wicket. But on 85 he was adjudged l.b.w. trying to sweep Parry as David Lloyd joined Donald. He struck one boundary before, with the total on 318, he drilled a ball straight back to Jennings who caught the ball in his follow through. Jennings then claimed a second scalp as with the final ball of the day he bowled Donald for 29.
Afternoon report
Having reached 83/0 at lunch, Nick Selman and Jack Murphy resumed the Glamorgan innings after lunch but their stand ended in the fifth over of the session as Saqib Mahmood bowled Selman for 36. Connor Brown joined Murphy and began by nurdling Mahmood through a vacant fourth slip for four runs. But the young pace bowler claimed a second wicket later in the over as Murphy departed in identical fashion to his opening partner.
Kiran Carlson opened his account with a clip to square-leg for two before Brown brought up the hundred by clipping Mahmood to square-leg for four. Brown then steered Danny Lamb through point for another boundary before drilling the seamer to the ropes at mid-off. He also greeted the return of Tom Bailey by guiding him for successive fours through the gully and extra cover. Carlson also pulled Keaton Jennings for four before pulling Bailey for four.
Brown greeted the introduction of Matt Parkinson into the attack by sweeping the leg-spinner for four before Carlson pulled him into the Grandstand for six, followed next ball by a punched drive off the back foot through extra cover. He added another fierce off-drive next over before completing his fifty from 74 balls in the penultimate over of the session.
Lunch Report
With spring-like conditions prevailing, it is quite appropriate that the men from the Red Rose county should be meeting those wearing the Daffodil sweaters. With many promising young players – and England aspirants - on display, all were hoping that the two-friendly would give them a chance for further outdoor practice before blossoming when the County Championship fixtures commence during the next fortnight.
Lancashire opted to bowl first after winning the toss with Nick Selman and Jack Murphy opening the batting for the home side, and Tom Bailey and Saqib Mahmood sharing the new ball. Selman duly struck the first boundary of the day as he clipped Mahmood to the ropes at mid-wicket, before Murphy flicked Bailey to backward square-leg for four. After surviving a loud appeal for l.b.w. Murphy also square-cut Bailey for four, with Selman also finding the ropes as shortly afterwards he square-drove Bailey.
Stephen Parry entered the attack in the 14th over and was steered through point for four by Murphy shortly before the 50-stand came up after eighty minutes of play. The pair continued to quietly accumulate in one’s and two’s as Aaron Lilley and Keaton Jennings had a spell in tandem
