Chris Cooke made an unbeaten 93 as Glamorgan emphatically defeated Surrey by 88 runs in the second of their 50 overs friendlies at the ICC Academy in Dubai.
Overhead conditions were less cloudy this morning as the second of the two contests got underway at 10am local time, with Surrey opting to bowl first. Matt Dunn struck early as he removed David Lloyd for 8 in his opening over, but Glamorgan’s second wicket pairing of Connor Brown and Nick Selman steadied the ship. The pair took the score to 86 in the 21st over when Selman was caught and bowled by Mathew Pillans.
Five runs later, the South African paceman struck again as Aneurin Donald top edged a pull and skied a catch to Surrey's acting captain Rory Burns and departed for one. The wobble in the Glamorgan innings continued with the total on 105 as Brown's innings came to an end as Pillans claimed a third victim as the young opener was caught behind by Academy wicket-keeper Jamie Smith.
Chris Cooke and Kiran Carlson then took the total to 155/5 in the 34th over whereupon the latter was removed by Ryan Patel, before eleven runs later Craig Meschede was run out. Cooke then received useful support from Jack Murphy and the lower order as with a combination of deft placement and some bludgeoning blows, Cooke ended unbeaten on 93 as Glamorgan finished on 285-8 at the end of their 50 overs.
Glamorgan's bowlers were soon amongst the wickets as Arun Harinath and Ryan Patel departed cheaply as Surrey slumped to 38/3 from 11 overs. Whilst Burns made 42, wickets continued to tumble at the other end to Michael Hogan, Lukas Carey, Ruaidhri Smith, Owen Morgan and Kieran Bull as Surrey subsided to 138-8. Some late resistance duly came from the tenth wicket pairing of Jade Dernbach and Gus Atkinson who shared a half-cemtury stand to give the Surrey total a more respectable look at 197
