Cooke returns to squad for Sussex Sharks clash

21 Jun 2021 | Cricket

Head coach Matt Maynard has named a 14-man squad for Glamorgan’s trip to Hove to face Sussex Sharks in the Vitality Blast tomorrow.

Captain Chris Cooke is included following a hamstring injury and is hoping to be passed fit, with wicket-keeper Tom Cullen retaining his place in the squad after filling in for Cooke in the victory over Middlesex on Friday night.

Seamer Roman Walker makes the T20 squad for the first time this season following impressive performances in the 2nd XI T20 competition and replaces Ruaidhri Smith who picked up a hamstring injury in training. The injury is currently being assessed by the Glamorgan medical team.

Glamorgan currently occupy 5th place in the South Group on five points after two wins, three losses and a no result from six matches, while Sussex Sharks are currently undefeated and sit in second spot on eight points.

Glamorgan 14-man squad: Chris Cooke*, Nick Selman, Colin Ingram, Marnus Labuschagne, David Lloyd, Kiran Carlson, Callum Taylor, Dan Douthwaite, James Weighell, Michael Neser, Timm van der Gugten, Prem Sisodiya, Tom Cullen +, Roman Walker.

View from the camp - Chris Cooke

"I’m in the squad so we’ll see how the bus trip and warm-up go, and hopefully I’ll be in contention to play. I think I’ll keep wicket but there’s an option to play just as a batter since Tom Cullen did really well the other night.

"It was an unbelievable performance in the field, the fielding and bowling was top drawer although it was nerve-wracking watching without any control over it. We haven’t put together complete performances, we’ve been really good for parts of games and really poor for parts of games. That showed against Middlesex, if you take out Colin Ingram’s knock we were way under par, so we’re just striving for a complete performance.

"We’re not firing as a batting group, but in a way that’s quite encouraging- a couple of us haven’t done much but we’re still fourth or fifth in the table. If we do start firing as a batting group, and we bowl and field like we did the other night, we’re going to be a tough team to beat.

"It’s a weird record in Hove because we had a record run-chase in the 50-over comp down there or we’ve been under the pump. It’ll be good to get that first win there, this group of players had a really good win in 2019 so there’ll be good feeling from that even though it was a different competition.

"They’re going really well with a good bowling group and some exciting batters, so it’s going to be a big test. But we’ve come off the back of a really good win, it’s a long competition and it just takes a good win on the road and that gets the ball rolling."

Head-to-Head – Sussex Sharks v Glamorgan

Glamorgan have lost six of their seven previous T20 matches at Hove, with the contest at Sussex’s headquarters in 2016 being declared a ‘No Result’ as rain swept in with the home side on 30-1 after 4.1 overs, chasing a target of 102, and five balls short of the minimum of five overs being needed to be bowled in order to constitute a match.
