Croft excited by early Khawaja arrival

Glamorgan Head Coach Robert Croft is excited that the county has been able to bring Australia Batsman Usman Khawaja over to Wales earlier than expected.

Khawaja had originally signed to be the Welsh county's overseas player for the Vitality Blast but will now arrive later this week and be available for the next three Specsavers County Championship fixtures, stating with Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Compatriot Shaun Marsh has been recalled to the Australia ODI squad for their series against England this summer, prompting Glamorgan to work on bringing Khawaja to Sophia Gardens sooner than planned. Croft is happy the county was able to come to an agreement with Cricket Australia.

"We're very pleased. Shaun is an international with experience and we've managed to replace him like for like. It's very important for the continued development of our batting group that they're first given opportunity but that they also have experience in and around them.

"He's a similar player to Shaun Marsh, they're both quite adaptable and he's [Khawaja] probably more used to facing the newer ball. As far as we're concerned, we see him fitting in a similar place as Shaun was so it's like for like.

"All reports we've had of him say he is a really good fella to fit in, not only with his runs but also the help he can give others around him."

With Khawaja already signed up for the Vitality Blast and Marsh away on international duty, Croft felt it was an ideal opportunity to get the big hitter up to speed with conditions and have another batting option in the County Championship.

"It was part of the thinking when we were identifying the player we wanted to get a feel of what Sophia Gardens is like and get a feel of cricket over here in Wales and England.

"He's had a spell over here before with Derbyshire so he's had experience in this environment."
