Robert Croft wants his team to ‘target everything’ in 2016, as he begins his first season as Glamorgan Head Coach.
Croft, who was appointed in the position in February, returns to the county where he acted as a spin coach and assistant last season.
The former England spinners wants his players to take the lead ahead of an exciting new season and says he will be concentrating on positives rather than negatives.
He said: “Sport is about players rather than coaches. We have to make sure that as support staff we put the players in the best possible position to play well, but it’s a player-led environment and one that focuses very much on strengths, not weaknesses.
“If our weaknesses are at an acceptable level and our strengths are at exceptional level then we have a chance. “
Croft said he was content with his side’s preparations, but was keen for the real matches to commence, starting on Sunday.
The Glamorgan squad enjoyed an intensive 10-day pre-season trip to Spain and friendly matches against Somerset and Gloucestershire, as well as the ongoing first-class match against Cardiff MCCU, which finishes today.
Croft added: “Pre-season has been good. There is a good blend between experience and youth in the squad. There is an excitement and people are aware of what we want to achieve.
“In the past my role was as a spin and assistant coach and my focus was quite small.
“Now it’s more of a holistic approach, about looking at the whole picture and ensuring everyone is working well together.”
Glamorgan’s county championship campaign begins on Sunday versus Leicestershire at The SSE SWALEC, starting at 11am.
