David Lloyd makes 95 as Glamorgan beat Cardiff MCCU by 45 runs (D/L Method)

21 Mar 2014 | Cricket
An assertive 95 by David Lloyd plus 57 from Stewart Walters saw Glamorgan to 278/7 from their 50 overs against Cardiff MCCU in their pre-season friendly at the SWALEC Stadium. In reply the students were 29/2 from 12 overs when rain ended play with Glamorgan ahead by 45 runs under the D/L Method.
Gareth Rees and Will Bragg opened the batting for the Welsh county as Dan Lewis-Williams and Andrew Westphal took the new ball for the students. Bragg was quickly into his stride, twice clipping Lewis-Williams to the ropes at mid-wicket in the opening over before depositing a free hit to long-on for four after Westphal had over-stepped. But the bowler gained revenge in the next over as he held onto a miscued drive at mid-on as Glamorgan lost their first wicket with the total on 19.

Rees then nurdled Lewis-Williams to third man but next ball he departed as wicket-keeper Sam Bracey took a fine one-handed catch diving to his left as the left-armer, who has played for Glamorgan 2nd XI, gained his second scalp. He might have gained a third but a thick edge from Stewart Walters' bat just dropped short of Uzi Qureshi at slip.

Walters then pulled a short ball from Westphal for four, before Harry Powell and Andrew Salter entered the attack. Walters and David Lloyd continued to play the ball around with few alarms, until the latter nearly edged Powell to slip with the ball again just dropping short of the fielder. He celebrated his good fortune by sweeping Salter for four before Walters brought up the hundred by pulling Powell to the fence at mid-wicket in the 23rd over.

Lloyd greeted the introduction of Sean Griffiths' medium-pace by pulling him for four before cover-driving Salter to bring up the hundred stand. Walters duly reached his fifty by pulling Griffiths for six - his 81st delivery - and later in the over Lloyd clipped the seamer behind square on the leg-side to also complete his half-century from 70 balls.

The third wicket pair had added 117 in 25 overs when Kieran Bull struck with his fifth ball as Walters was caught behind trying to guide the young off-spinner to third man. 143/3 then became 146/4 as Ben Wright was bowled by Powell before Aneurin Donald cam in and immediately got off the mark with a single to cover. Lloyd added to his boundary tally as he crisply off-drove Powell besides deftly late-cutting Bull to third man.

Donald also worked the ball around, besides playing some inventive strokes as well as a booming off-drive for four when Westphal returned as the pair further consolidated Glamorgan's position in the last ten overs. His impressive cameo ended as he was caught for 20 when Westphal returned to the attack shortly before Mark Wallace brought up the 200 in the 41st over with a lofted drive over extra-cover.

Lloyd then drilled Bull over long-off for another four before pulling Lewis-Williams into the Pavilion enclosures.. He maintained the impetus by striking Bull back over his head for four but next ball he was caught and bowled by the young spinner for 95.Chris Cooke then helped his captain maintain the tempo in the closing overs with a pair of leg-side sixes which also saw Wallace swat Lewis-Williams for four before miscuing to mid-off.

Chasing their target of 279, Qureshi and Bradley Scriven began the students' reply against the new ball attack of Huw Waters and Will Owen. There was little though on offer as both of the professionals delivered a probing spell with the parsimony of Waters being rewarded as he trapped Scriven l.b.w. After several tight overs, Owen dropped short to Qureshi who pulled the ball for six, but the bowler responded next over by bowling Tom Hamilton.

Qureshi steered John Glover through extra cover for four but with the cloud cover having steadily built up, it started to rain and the players left the field after the 12th over with the students on 29/2 and Glamorgan ahead by 45 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis Method. The rain was still falling at 4.30pm when the umpires called play off for the day.
