David Lloyd became today the first-ever Glamorgan captain to score a triple-hundred, as well as the second highest score in the Club’s history as he made 313* on the second day of Glamorgan’s LV=Insurance County Championship match against Derbyshire at Cardiff. (writes Andrew Hignell)
His sequence of broken records began with a late-cut against Luis Reece to reach 234* and register the highest score by a Glamorgan batter at the ground beating Hugh Morris’ unbeaten 233 against Warwickshire in 1997. Later in the over he clipped Reece for two to break Aneurin Donald’s record for the highest score for Glamorgan against Derbyshire beating the 234 made at Colwyn Bay in 2016.
Having reached lunch on 288, he then reached 300 with a six over long-on against Alex Thomson before a single against Adam Sylvester saw him pass Steve James’ 309* at Colwyn Bay in 2000 as it became the highest individual score in Wales by a Glamorgan batter. David then declared on 313*, equal with Jimmy Cook’s record of 313* made for Somerset in 1990 for the highest first-class score at the Cardiff ground.
The top six scores for Glamorgan are listed below, with David's score also being the highest in first-class cricket for Glamorgan by a Welsh-born player - a feat previously held by Mike Powell:
410* Sam Northeast v Leicestershire at Leicester, 2022
313* David Lloyd v Derbyshire at Sophia Gardens, 2022
309* Steve James v Sussex at Colwyn Bay, 2000
299 Mike Powell v Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College, 2006
287* Emrys Davies v Gloucestershire at Rodney Parade, Newport, 1939
280* Dick Duckfield v Surrey at The Oval, 1936
This is also the first-ever time in Championship cricket that any team has had players who have scored 400 and a 300 in the same season.
