Derbyshire are 78/1 at the close of the second day of their Specsavers County Championship match against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay after following-on 341 runs in arrears.

With Billy Godleman unwell and unable to open the innings Harvey Hosein , after his obdurate defence in the first innings, joined Hamish Rutherford as Michael Hogan and Craig Meschede shared the new ball as the second time in three matches between the two counties, Glamorgan invited Derbyshire to follow-on. Hosein continued to play fluently, clipping Hogan to mid-wicket and sending a short ball from Meschede to the point boundary. Rutherford then cover drove Meschede before Hosein drilled the same bowler to the ropes at long-on.
Andrew Salter entered the fray after ten overs with Graham Wagg joining him in the eleventh, as Rutherford flicked Salter to mid-wicket for four before dispatching him through extra cover. Owen Morgan then replaced Wagg and with his second delivery had Hosein caught down the leg-side by Wallace.
59/1 saw Chesney Hughes join Rutherford with the pair seeing Derbyshire to the close of play as Salter and Morgan bowled in tandem for ten overs before Hogan had a two-over salvo at the Embankment End and Wagg had another over at the Penrhyn Aveneue End.
Afternoon update
Having reduced Derbyshire to 71/4, Glamorgan were looking to press home their advantage in the afternoon session and in the second over of the session Neil Broom edged Michael Hogan just past the outstretched hands of third slip. Graham Wagg then replaced Meschede and had Broom caught behind as the Kiwi attempted an expansive drive against the left-arm swinger.
Shiv Thakor responded with a pair of cover drives against Hogan, followed by a nurdle to third man as the hundred came up in the 22nd over. Matt Critchley twice guided Wagg to third man for four before doing the same to Hogan. Thakor then edged Wagg through the slip cordon for four but he departed next ball as he again edged Wagg into Wallace’s safe gloves as Derbyshire slid further to 125/6.
David Lloyd then entered the attack and saw Critchley edged him high over the slips, but the all-rounder gained revenge as in his third over the batsman skewed a pull and Wallace pouched the ball. 135/7 saw Palladino join Harvey Hosein who cut Lloyd for four. Palladino also carved Lloyd over the head of point for four before Owen Morgan returned to the attack at the Embankment End.
Meschede continued at the Penrhyn Avenue End and saw Hosein inside-edge a ball to fine-leg, but with the total on 159, Palladino chipped Morgan into Donald’s hands at mid-on. Will Davis came in and edged a cut against the left-arm spinner which just evaded the hands of slip, whilst Hosein flicked Salter to fine-leg for four. With the total on 176 the off-spinner bowled Davis, and then one run later Hogan returned to bowl Ben Cotton as Glamorgan secured a mammoth lead of 341 runs and invited Derbyshire to follow-on.
Lunch Report
It was quite a day yesterday as Aneurin Donald’s six-hitting spree put passing motorists in peril driving along Penrhyn Avenue with the teenager’s record-breaking double-hundred propelling Glamorgan to 481/8 – their highest-ever score at the end of the opening day of a County Championship match in the Club’s history. However, there was still further work to be done this morning for the overnight pairing of Craig Meschede and Owen Morgan, plus number eleven Michael Hogan, as they looked to take Glamorgan past the 500-mark
Will Davis resumed the bowling at the Embankment End looking to further improve on what already were career-best figures, whilst Tony Palladino began at the Penrhyn Avenue End, but the ninth wicket pair continued to gather singles with Morgan also steering Palladino through backward point for four before pulling Davis to mid-wicket for another crisply struck four.
The rookie spinner then brought up the 500 by steering David through backward point for four but with the otal on 506 he departed l.b.w. to David having made a career-best 40. Hogan responded by cover-driving Davis for four but with the total on 518 he was yorked by Davis who ended with figures of 7/146.
Billy Godleman and Hamish Rutherford began Derbyshire’s reply as Graham Wagg and Hogan shared the new ball. Rutherford began with legside fours against each bowler, whilst Godleman inside-edged and square-drove Wagg for a brace of fours. Rutheford then cover drove and on-drove Wagg for further boundaries as the Peakites made a breezy reply.
Meschede then entered the attack at the Penrhyn Avenue End and induced an edge from Rutherford’s bat, with the ball bisecting the fielders at second slip and gully. Next over, Meschede found the edge again as Rutherford was caught by Mark Wallace with Derbyshire losing their first wicket on 52.
After Hogan had completed a probing and frugal spell at the Embankment End, Glamorgan switched to spin and with his second delivery Andrew Salter had an l.b.w. appeal upheld against Godleman and 62/2.then became 66/3 as Meschede bowled Chesney Hughes.. Then in the final over of the session, Meschede's accuracy was rewarded as he struck again with Madesen chipping a ball into Hogan's hands at short mid-wicket.
