Derbyshire reach 236/9 before bad light ends play

Lukas Carey claimed three wickets as Glamorgan reduced Derbyshire to 236/9 when bad light ended play shortly after tea on the third day of their weather-ravaged Specsavers County Championship match against Glamorgan at Derby after the Peakites had been put in to bat by the Welsh county.

Evening Update

Derbyshire resumed after tea on 219/6 from 64 overs with Meschede and Hogan bowling in tandem. Harry Podmore began by drilling Meschede for four through the covers before Matt Critchley nut-megged Selman at second slip with the ball racing away for four to third man. But with the total on 228, Hogan bowled Podmore before one run later Hardus Viljoen became another l.b.w. victim for Meschede.

Imran Tahir then joined Critchley but when the total on 236, the leg-spinner hoiked across the line against Hogan and had his stumps re-arranged, but before Will Davis could take guard, the light had deteriorated and the umpires took the players off the field. It soon started to rain and play was called off at 5pm.

Afternoon Report

Having reduced the home side to 109/4 at lunch, Glamorgan were looking to make further inroads after opting to bowl first as Hogan and de Lange resumed the bowling against Alex Hughes and Gary Wilson. The former began by clipping de Lange to fine-leg for four followed by a booming off-drive against the paceman plus a pull for four and a fierce slash to the ropes at third man.

Wilson also pulled a short ball from Hogan for four before Hughes edged Meschede just wide of second slip as the Derby floodlights came on at the overcast 3aaa ground. Carey returned to the attack shortly afterwards and after seeing Wilson cover drive him for four, the youngster found the edge of the Irishman’s bat only for Nick Selman at second slip to spill the catch. In Carey’s next over, Wilson had a second life as Andrew Salter dropped a chance at backward point before nurdling the youngster to the vacant ropes at third man.

With the light deteriorating, Salter’s off spin was introduced with his first delivery steered by Wilson through the covers for four before his second was pulled to mid-wicket. Wilson then deftly glanced Carey to fine-leg for four whilst Hughes scythed Salter through point for another boundary, but with the total on 187 he repeated the stroke against Carey and edged a ball into Cook’s gloves.

Wilson then greeted the return of De Lange by pulling him for four, before Matt Critchley began with an off-drive and cover drive against the paceman, but with the total on 208 Carey struck again as Wilson departed l.b.w.

Lunchtime Report

The frustrations shared by the players, officials and spectators at Derby over the rain-soaked conditions during the past two days have been put into context by the scenes of devastation from the Caribbean as a result of Hurricane Irma. Whereas the residents of these islands are bracing themselves for the arrival of yet another tropical storm, it was business as usual this morning at a sunny 3aaa County Ground as the match began 48 hours late.

Glamorgan welcomed back Jacques Rudolph, Colin Ingram, Chris Cooke and Marchant de Lange to their line-up with MIchael Hogan opting to forego the toss and bowl first. De Lange and Carey shared the new ball with Ben Slater securing a trio of fours in de Lange’s second over – the first off the edge to third man, and the others off the middle through extra-cover and through point – before surviving a sharp chance at backward point in the paceman’s third over.

Luis Reece began with a booming cover drive against Carey who also had a series of i.b.w. shouts turned down, before having one upheld with the last ball off his fourth over as Slater departed with the total on 31. Reece responded with a firm clip to mid-wicket against de Lange, followed by a savage square-cut whilst Billy Godleman began in quixotic fashion playing and missing at several balls from Carey besides twice nearly running himself out.

Godleman also edged Carey through the slips for three before on-driving the youngster for three to bring up the 50. Carey then saw an edge from Reece being spilled in the slips but an edge from Godleman’s bat in Craig Meschede’s third over was safely pouched by Chris Cook as Wayne Madsen became Reece’s new partner.

Reece responded with another square-cut against Carey before Hogan entered the attack at the City End. Madsen greeted him with a firm off-drive for four whilst Reece again straight drove Meschede for a pair of fours before getting a thick outside edge for four through the slips against Hogan. Next over he off-drove successive balls from Meschede, but de Lange returned and ended Madsen's stay at the crease as he drove uppishly to point where Kiran Carlson completed the catch. The paceman nearly claimed a wicket next ball as Alex Hughes squirted a yorker through the slip cordon, but the Springbok claimed a wicket in the final over as he bowled Reece shortly after the opener had completed a 91-ball fifty
