Rain delayed the start of play
Morning update
Precipitation fell for much of Saturday and throughout the night, and there was still steady rain falling when the players arrived at the ground around 9am. It was still falling an hour later when the two umpires - Alex Wharf and Nigel Cowley - decided to delay the start which had been scheduled for 11am.
A further inspection took place at 11.30am at which the umpires decided that there would be no play before lunch, and after further inspections, they decided to look again at 2.10pm.
Play began at 2.40pm
Afternoon update
Rain delayed the start of this contest and left both sides to ponder on the fickle way that injuries can affect county cricket. As far as Glamorgan were concerned, they welcomed back Michael Hogan - their talismanic fast bowler - who has recovered from the hamstring injury that saw him miss the opening month of the season. In contrast, Derbyshire were still licking their wounds having lost the services of several players including Martin Guptill, their hired hand from New Zealand, who in the course of the past few weeks has struck double hundreds in both the World Cup and the County Championship. Indeed, his innings last week at Bristol was described by some as one of the best-ever for the Peakites, but injury means that the Kiwi, like Wes Durston, Tony Palladino and Tom Taylor, will not feature in this contest, whilst Billy Godleman is also suspended for this game
Steady rain on Saturday, throughout the night and first thing this morning meant that there was a blank morning session, and after several inspections by the umpires - Alex Wharf and Nigel Cowley - as well as plenty of mopping up operations, play got underway at 2.40pm with Glamorgan bowling first after winning the toss. Hogan duly took the new ball with Graham Wagg and bowled a short initial spell at the River End before being replaced by Andy Carter. Chesney Hughes and Ben Slater played watchfully during this opening salvo before the former pulled a short ball from Wagg to the ropes at mid-wicket.
But the left-armer gained revenge in his sixth over as Hughes drove uppishly into Craig Meschede's hands at mid-off. 26/1 saw visiting captain Wayne Madsen make his way to the middle but his stay proved to be a brief one as after a single, he was trapped l.b.w. by Carter who delivered a wickedly in-swinging delivery to the Derbyshire number three. With Scott Elstone as his new partner. Slater unfurled a pair of well-timed drives to long-off and wide mid-wicket off successive balls from Wagg before glancing the next delivery to fine-leg.
Hogan duly switched to the Cathedral Road End and operated around the wicket to the left-handed Slater, but the clouds started to gather again and in the next over, the heavens opened as the players left the field for an early tea.
The rain continued to fall throughout the tea interval, and with no let-up in the precipitation, the umpires called off play for the day at 5pm.
