Glamorgan travel to Derby for their next contest in the Specsavers County Championship with the four-day game at Derbyshire’s headquarters scheduled to start at 11.00am on Sunday May 19th.
After their exciting draw at Newport against Gloucestershire, Glamorgan head to Derby where last year’s match between the two teams in early September saw a ten-wicket haul by Tony Palladino guide Derbyshire to a 169-run victory. Glamorgan had opted to bowl first on the green-tinged surface but Billy Godleman rode his luck in his team’s first innings before the seam and swing of Palladino saw him scythed his way through the visiting line-up, with only Chris Cooke offering any lengthy defiance.
The match in 2017at Derby proved to be a soggy affair with a combination of rain and a saturated outfield seeing just a couple of sessions of play on the third day. The weather played a role as well in 2016 with snow, sleet and hail interrupting proceedings as the contest ended all-square.
Conditions were much drier in 2015 when Glamorgan met the Peakites at the picturesque Queen’s Park ground in Chesterfield. This time, the Welsh county were in the ascendency, forcing Derbyshire to follow-on before a rear-guard action led by Hamish Rutherford saw the home side hold on for a draw.
Glamorgan’s most recent Championship victory at Derby came in 2006 when Mark Cosgrove, the left-handed Australian struck a career-best 233 in a furious assault on the Peakites bowling which helped to set-up a six-wicket victory for his side. In fact, the Welsh county have a quite modest recent record in Championship cricket at Derby ground having lost on four of the five previous occasions they have played a red ball match at the County Ground.
