England vs New Zealand - An epic rivalry

14 Jul 2023 | Cricket

The only International cricket in Wales this summer sees England take on New Zealand in the next chapter of an epic rivalry on Friday, 8th September.

This fixture has produced some spellbinding action over the last few years, as we take a look back at some of the finest fixtures played between the two sides before they clash in Cardiff later this year.

2019 – World Cup Final

The greatest Final of all time, as England win by the barest of margins.

England beat New Zealand to win the men's World Cup for the first time after one of the most amazing games of cricket ever played was tied twice.

In an emotional and electric atmosphere at Lord's, both sides scored 241 in their 50 overs and were level on 15 when they batted for an extra over apiece.

It meant England were crowned World Champions by virtue of having scored more boundary fours and sixes - 26 to New Zealand's 17 – over the course of the entire match.

That it even got to that stage was astonishing in itself and came as a result of a barely believable conclusion at the home of cricket - the first tie in a World Cup Final.

England required 15 from the last over of the regular match. Ben Stokes hit a six and then benefited when a throw from the deep hit his bat and was deflected for four overthrows.

He could not get the two needed from the last ball - Mark Wood was run out coming back for the second - but ended 84 not out and joined Jos Buttler for the super over.

February 2023 – Thriller in Wellington

New Zealand beat England in one-run thriller, making history by overcoming follow-on.

New Zealand became only the fourth team in history to win a Test after following on, and the second to win by a one-run margin, as they wrestled the game away from England on a dramatic final day in Wellington. Neil Wagner was the catalyst with a short-ball assault during the afternoon session and he capped the comeback by taking the final wicket amid rising tension at Basin Reserve.

Wagner finished with 4 for 62 as the home side battled back after a century stand between Joe Root and Ben Stokes to inflict England's first defeat in seven Tests and ensure a drawn series.

June 2022 – Bairstow brilliance as Bazball begins

Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root rampage to England's seven-wicket win, and series clean-sweep.

Jonny Bairstow came barrelling out of the dressing-room with the impatience of a man who'd endured a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay, as he and Joe Root rampaged to a 3-0 series win on the final afternoon at Headingley in just 15.2 overs of pedal-to-the-metal action.

For the third time in as many matches, a supposedly daunting target - 296 on this occasion, compared to 277 at Lord's and 299 at Trent Bridge - was hunted down with preposterous haste. Bairstow, following back-to-back centuries in his previous two innings, rushed along to a 29-ball fifty, England's second-fastest in Tests, and by the time he ran out of road on 71 not out from 44 balls, he'd chewed up Root's chances of emulating Daryl Mitchell's feat of centuries in each of the three Tests.
