15 Jun 2023 | Cricket

Glamorgan travel to Chelmsford on Friday 16 June for their next match in the Vitality Blast, with the contest against Essex scheduled to get underway at 1900 (writes Andrew Hignell).

The Welsh county have won three and lost five of their previous T20 contests at Chelmsford, with – as the list below shows – their match at Essex’s headquarters in 2022 seeing the hosts win by 69 runs.

29 July, 2016 - No Result
16 July, 2017 - Glamorgan won by 5 wickets
13 July, 2018 - Glamorgan won by 2 wickets
16 Aug, 2019 - Match Abandoned
1 July, 2021 - Essex won by 8 wickets
2 July 2022 - Essex won by 69 runs

Last summer’s game saw Essex post a mammoth 254-5 with their batter plundering 95 runs from the final five over as they registered the highest ever total against Glamorgan in T20 cricket. Player of the match Dan Lawrence led the way with 71 from 37 balls whilst Paul Walter struck a 20-ball fifty, but the highest score of the match, albeit in a losing cause, came from the bat of Sam Northeast who made an unbeaten 97.

In 2018 Glamorgan pulled off one of their greatest-ever run chases in white-ball cricket. However, such a scenario seemed unlikely as the visitors subsided to 110-8 chasing a target of 168. But Chris Cooke, together with the stoic support of Timm van der Gugten added 61 in 26 balls, with Chris striking a volley of massive sixes against the despondent attack before striking the final delivery for four to clinch a stunning victory by two wickets.

The 2017 contest at Chelmsford was a high-scoring affair with a stirring Glamorgan victory, although the Eagles seemed to be in the driving seat as Varun Chopra scored an unbeaten 103 as the home side amassed 219-4. But Colin Ingram responded with a superb 114 before run out during the closing stages of the contest just when he looked like breaking Ian Thomas’s record of 116* for the highest individual score for the Welsh county in the competition. But Colin’s efforts did not go to waste as Craig Meschede struck the last ball of the contest high over back ward point for six to clinch a thrilling five-wicket victory.
