Here’s list of the key things to look out for in our 2021 fixture calendar at Glamorgan and Sophia Gardens, including the return of the Royal London Cup, three England international and a new County Championship format.
1. The Vitality Blast is back
It may have moved to earlier in the summer, but the Vitality Blast will be as fast-paced and action-packed as always.
Glamorgan have three Friday night fixtures at Sophia Gardens and will bookend their campaign at home against local rivals Gloucestershire (10th June) and Somerset (16th July) – not a bad way to start and finish a competition!
Our Early Bird T20 Season tickets went on sale earlier today and you can watch all seven home matches for just £60. Buy HERE.
2. A new LV= Insurance County Championship format
We won’t go through all the details when you can find them HERE but rest assured this year’s County Championship format will be completely unique.
Every county will begin the season with the opportunity to win both the County Championship and the Bob Willis Trophy and will be run in distinct formats – Group Stage (April – July) and Division Stage (August – September).
What’s particularly exciting from a Glamorgan perspective is we will be playing in a strong group stage containing Lancashire, Kent, Northamptonshire, Sussex and Yorkshire who we haven’t played in the County Championship since 2012.
3. Three England Internationals
That’s right! Not one, not two, but three England internationals this year at Sophia Gardens.
First up are back-to-back IT20s between England and Sri Lanka (23rd & 24th June) with both sides looking to fine tune their teams before the IT20 World Cup later this year. Enter the ballot for tickets HERE.
We then host and ODI between England against Pakistan on Thursday, 8th July. It’s going to be crackerjack match which sees the reigning World Champions taking on the current Champions Trophy holders.
Tickets are currently on general sale and selling fast so buy yours today to avoid disappointment.
4. The return of the Royal London Cup
The Royal London Cup will return this summer, following a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 18 First-Class counties have been randomly drawn into two groups of nine teams.
Each county will play eight group-stage matches – four at home and four away – with the top three counties in each group progressing to the knockout stages.
Glamorgan will be up against some strong teams at Sophia Gardens, opening the competition against Warwickshire on Thursday, 22nd July, before facing Surrey and Notts Outlaws and finishing their group stage campaign against Yorkshire Vikings on Thursday, 13th August.
5. Our Live Stream
Last year our live stream received club record numbers with over 587,000 people tuning in to watch our Vitality Blast and County Championship fixtures.
We are pleased to say the live stream will be back this season and cover every home game across all three formats.
The club feels this is particularly important with the on-going uncertainty around crowds and the announcement earlier today that we will be unable to play at our out-grounds this season.
Members and supporters across Wales and the world will still be able to follow and cheer the side from their homes this summer, with details on how it will look and how to watch coming soon.
