Glamorgan 2nd XI drew with Gloucestershire 2nd XI in their three-day friendly at Cardiff CC after a fightback by the visitor's for whom Ian Cockbain made 153.
Cockbain's rearguard action meant that Glamorgan needed 156 from 24 overs and with Jeremy Lawlor and Ben Wright sharing a stand of 48 in just four and half overs for the third wicket, Glamorgan looked like overcoming the early loss of Tom Lancefield and Chris Cooke.
Lawlor then departed for 38, but Wright maintained the impetus and despite further wickets at the other end, he reached his half century from 41 balls. But with seven runs needed off the last four balls, he departed to Graham McCarter and debutant Kieran Carlson and Will Owen could only scramble a couple of singles as the game ended all square.
Yesterday, Wright had made 150 as Glamorgan amassed 359 in their first innings to secure a decent lead of 203. Gloucestershire then faired better in their second innings with Benny Howell (55) and Dan Housego (29) adding 76 for the first wicket. But Ruaidhri Smith and David Lloyd each claimed a couple of wickets as Gloucestershire entered the final day's play still 62 runs in arrears with Cockbain unbeaten on 41.
He duly went on to make 153 before departing to teenage spinner Sam Pearce, and thanks to a stubborn 29 in almost two hours by Ian Saxelby, Gloucestershire were able to blunt the home attack and further chisel away at the deficit. David Lloyd claimed 4/59, whilst Smith and John Glover each claimed a couple of wickets, but the task of a helter-skelter run chase of 156 from the final 24 overs just proved to be beyond Glamorgan's reach as the contest ended in a draw.
