Glamorgan County Cricket Club can announce, on St David’s Day, that Sam Northeast and Kiran Carlson will be the Club’s Red and White ball Captains respectively for the 2024 season.

Northeast will take the helm in the County Championship, following his huge success so far during his tenure in Wales. The 34-year-old amassed 1,990 runs across all three formats and won the Glamorgan Player of the Year Trophy in his first season.

He famously broke Steve James’ Club record for the highest individual first-class score when he hit 410 not out against Leicestershire in his first season at the Club in 2022. Just two months later, he smashed the Club’s highest-ever individual List A score when he made an unbeaten 177 against Worcestershire at New Road.

He added two centuries in the County Championship and one in the Metro Bank One Day Cup last season to his already stellar career, and will bring a wealth of experience to the captaincy role, having been Club Captain at both Kent and Hampshire.

On being announced as Red ball Captain, Northeast said: “It’s a huge honour and a privilege to take over as Red ball Captain building on the good work David Lloyd did for the Club.

“I look forward to working with Grant and Kiran on getting us into Division One. We aim to play an exciting front-foot style of cricket with a nice blend of youth and experience.

“We can’t wait for the season to get going and I look forward to seeing all the Welsh fans in the stadium.”

Kiran Carlson will take the reins for both of the White ball competitions. After skippering the side in the One Day Cup for the past few seasons, and famously captaining the side to the One Day Cup title in 2021, he will also take full charge of the team for Vitality Blast.

Carlson had another stellar year with the bat in 2023, scoring 1,000 runs in the County Championship for the first time, and putting in some scintillating performances in both Vitality Blast and the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

Carlson scored 1,068 runs in Red ball cricket at an average of 46.43, striking five half-centuries and four centuries during the campaign. At the top of the order in Blast, Carlson was a revelation, scoring 392 runs at a strike rate of over 170. He was awarded the 2024 Glamorgan Player of the Year Award.

On his appointment, Carlson added: “I am honoured to be announced as White ball Captain for Glamorgan.

“It is an exciting time for the squad and hopefully we can play a really positive brand of cricket that the fans will enjoy. But more importantly, win a lot of games for Glamorgan.

“We have some real talent and ability within our squad and the opportunity to go out as Captain for part of the season will be great.

“I would like to thank the management who feel that I’m the man for the job and hopefully we can put plenty of bums on seats when the first games come around in May.”

Head Coach Grant Bradburn said: “One early impression for me is that Glamorgan are very fortunate to possess many natural leaders.

“In Sam and Kiran, our group will have two highly respected players adding different skills in guiding our success and continued growth, as our team looks to take a new direction.

“I look forward to working with our newly appointed Captains, empowering and assisting them both to lead from the front with winning performances.”

Director of Cricket, Mark Wallace, said: “I’m delighted that Sam and Kiran will form our leadership team for this season.

“They’re both very talented leaders with a diverse range of experience under their belts and will complement each other really well.”
