Glamorgan are 93/2 before rain brings an early finish

Glamorgan recovered from the loss of two early wickets to reach 93/2 when rain stopped play shortly before lunch after being invited to bat by Kent at The SSE SWALEC in their contest in the Specsavers County Championship. The rain continued for the rest of the afternoon before play was called off for the day at 4pm.

The past week has seen Glamorgan and Kent go head-to-head in all three formats of the county game with Glamorgan were victorious both last Sunday in their 50-overs encounter at Canterbury as well as on Friday night under the Cardiff floodlights . But Kent enjoyed the better of the early exchanges as the two teams returned to red ball cricket this morning at The SSE SWALEC. With a heavy cloud cover and moisture in the air, Kent captain Sam Northeast opted to bowl first and his decision was rewarded by his new ball bowlers who each claimed a wicket with their fifth delivery of the day.

First, Matt Coles clean bowled Mark Wallace before Jacques Rudolph was snared l.b.w. by Darren Steven as Glamorgan slipped to 7/2. Will Bragg responded by clipping Coles to the mid-wicket boundary followed by a deft glance to fine-leg, before Chris Cooke also on- and off-drove Coles for four and three from successive balls. Bragg then got a leading edge to a delivery from Coles which bisected third slip and gully, before drilling the next delivery to long-off.

Cooke then cover drove Stevens for four before on-driving a no-ball from Mitch Claydon to the ropes at mid-wicket. He then drilled Stevens through mid-wicket as the recovery continued with Glamorgan reaching the 50-mark in the thirteenth over as Bragg dispatched another no-ball from Claydon  This followed an eventful period which included a five-minute delay whilst wicket-keeper Adam Rouse, himself a late call-up to the Kent side following an injury in the nets yesterday to Sam Billings, received treatment for a dislocated finger, before Cooke was dropped at second slip by James Tredwell as he edged a ball from Stevens.

Cooke atoned for his mistake by pulling Claydon for four before punching Calum Haggett through extra-cover for four, followed by a pair of pulls from successive balls from Coles when the all-rounder returned to the attack.

But light rain had started to fall and it soon intensified as the players left the field at 12.35pm for an early lunch. The precipitation continued throughout the afternoon with the umpires calling off play shortly after 4pm.
