5/27 by Oliver Hannon-Dalby, plus half-centuries by Varun Chopra (80*) and Jonathan Trott (73*) saw Warwickshire emphatically defeat Glamorgan by nine wickets with 11.5 overs to spare at Edgbaston in their day-night contest in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
With the game taking place on the same wicket as used for the Third Ashes Test, both sides played an extra spinner with Andrew Salter playing in place of Aneurin Donald. After winning the toss, Jacques Rudolph had no hesitation in batting first and the captain duly opened with Will Bragg as Keith Barker and Rikki Clarke shared the new ball for Warwickshire.
After a pair of maidens, Bragg struck the first boundary in the third over as he guided Barker to third man before Rudolph drilled the left-arm seamer through the covers. Next over he copied the stroke against Clarke but then edged a delivery from Barker into the gloves of wicket-keeper Tim Ambrose.. With the total on 22/1, Colin Ingram joined Bragg who guided Clarke through backward point for four before the Ingram got off the mark by doing the same to Barker as Glamorgan reached 33/1 at the end of the first powerplay.
Ingram then drilled Barker over the head of extra cover for four before Bragg cover drove Jeetan Patel who had entered the attack at the City End. Oliver Hannon-Dalby also replaced Barker at the Pavilion End and in his second over he removed Ingram as he pulled a ball straight to the fielder at short mid-wicket. 53/2 then became 59/3 as Hannon-Dalby struck again with David Lloyd, who had been promoted up the order, miscuing a drive and lofting a catch to mid-off.
Chris Cooke joined Bragg who drilled Hannon-Dalby through the covers for four. Cooke got off the mark by steering Hannon-Dalby to third man for four before leg-glancing him in the following over. But the seamer gained his third wicket as Cooke edged behind in the 23
rd over. 84/4 then became 93/5 as Bragg swept leg-spinner Josh Poysden's third delivery to mid-wicket where William Porterfield took a superb catch diving forward and to his left.
Mark Wallace and Graham Wagg duly joined forces and took the score to 108 when Poysden struck again as Wallace spooned a catch to short extra-cover. Craig Meschede came in and immediately off-drove Ateeq Javid for four, before lofting Poysden to long-on for four. Wagg also opened his shoulders to loft the leg-spinner over long-off before Meschede reverse-swept Poysden for four.
Hannon-Dalby then replaced Poysden and with his second delivery he removed Wagg who was well caught low down in the gully. 141/7 saw Andrew Salter join Meschede with the new man cover-driving Poysden when the leg-spinner returned, but it was Jeetan Patel who ended Meschede's stay as eight runs later he lofted a ball into the hands of deep mid-wicket. With the total on 157 Dean Cosker was bowled by Poysden as the home side persevered with spin, before Michael Hogan lofted the leg-spinner straight for six. But Hannon-Dalby then returned at the Pavilion End and with his fourth delivery he had Salter caught behind as the tall seamer claimed his fifth wicket with Glamorgan ending on 179.
Hogan and Wagg shared the new ball, with Porterfield square-driving the latter to start the home team's response before cover-driving the former. He then straight drove Wagg, but with the total on 26, he chopped a ball from Hogan onto his stumps. Chopra was joined by Jonathan Trott with the opener then off-driving Hogan for four before Meschede and Cosker entered the attack at the end of the first powerplays. Trott pulled a short ball from Cosker for four as the home side reached fifty in the 13
th over.
Chopra then on-drove Meschede for three, before sweeping Cosker but for half a dozen overs the two bowlers restricted the home batsmen to just singles. Salter then entered the attack at the City End and was cover driven for four before being swept for three to bring up the fifty stand. Trott then on-drove Cosker for four before twice pulling the spinner for further boundaries as the 100 came up in the 23
rd over.
After Chopra harpooned Cosker for six over mid-wicket, the leg-spin of Ingram was used in a bid to end the second wicket stand which was hurrying the home side towards their victory target. But Trott pulled a long-hop from the leg-spinner for four as the century stand came up shortly before Trott completed a 68-ball fifty, whilst Chopra completed his from 79 deliveries by cover-driving Ingram for his fourth four.
Chopra celebrated by late cutting Ingram whilst Trott lofted Lloyd's medium pace over long-on for four. Chopra then drilled Lloyd through mid-on for four before Cosker returned and was driven over the head of cover by Chopra for a pair of fours. Trott then pulled Lloyd for four before ending the contest in the 39
th over by cutting Lloyd for four.
