Hogan made an early double strike
Lunchtime Report
Two of the combatants in this contest have a combined career aggregate of almost 48,000 first-class runs, but with the overhead conditions assisting the swing and seam bowlers, neither Murray Goodwin or Shivnarine Chanderpaul significantly added to their hugely impressive tally yesterday as sixteen wickets tumbled at a ground which had been saturated less than 24 hours before the start of the game as torrential thunderstorms broke over the City of Derby on Saturday afternoon.
Derbyshire began the day with a slender lead of four runs and as many wickets remaining with Glamorgan's seamers chomping at the bit to swiftly end their resistance. Michael Hogan made the perfect start as Gareth Cross shouldered arms to the first ball of the day and had his stumps re-arranged. To the last ball of the over, Alex Hughes clipped the Australian to square-leg for four but next over his middle stump was sent somersaulting out of the ground by Hogan.
Tony Palladino deftly glanced Hogan to fine-leg for four before pulling him for six to mid-wicket. Jim Allenby then entered the attack as James Harris switched from the Racecourse End to the City End in place of Hogan. The youngster duly found the edge of Palladino's bat with the ball dropped short of the slip cordon and sped away to the boundary. He then chipped Harris just over the head of Murray Goodwin at mid-off before celebrating his good fortune by clipping Allenby for four to long-leg.
Will Owen returned at the City End and was crisply off-driven for four by David Wainwright as the ninth wicket pair continued their jaunty stand and secured a batting point in the 62
nd over, which an hour earlier had seemed unlikely, Another spooned drive by Palladino just evaded the hands of mid-wicket before Dean Cosker entered the attack, but Wainwright drove him straight for four, before sweeping him to the mid-wicket ropes.
Shortly before lunch, Hogan also returned at the Racecourse End but it was Cosker who ended the stubborn stand with the total on 220 as Palladino chipped a ball to Goodwin at long-off . Mark Footitt was then almost run out in the next over after a horrible mix-up in calling before the pair scampered a series of singles with the pace bowler also nearly spooning Hogan into cover's hands. He then smeared Cosker for a trio of leg-side fours as the lead went past the 100-mark, but next over Wainwright edged Hogan into Wallace's gloves as Derbyshire were all out for 241.
Footitt claimed his 50th wicket of the season during the session
Teatime report
Will Bragg and Jacques Rudolph began Glamorgan's second innings immediately after the delayed lunch following the home side having secured a lead of 103 runs. Rudolph was soon into his stride cover-driving Mark Footitt and then drilling Tony Palladino to the ropes at long-off but in the third over Bragg chipped a drive against Footitt into the hands of mid-on.
9/1 then became 13/2 as Murray Goodwin edged Footitt into Gareth Cross' gloves to give the left-armer his 50
th first-class wicket of the summer. Rudolph also inside-edged a drive against Palladino as the new ball jagged around in the muggy conditions, but it was a short rising delivery from Footitt that proved to be the Springbok's undoing as he spliced a return catch to the gleeful bowler as Glamorgan nosedived further with Footitt having taken 3/3 from 19 balls.
It nearly became 17/4 as Chris Cooke edged a ball from Footitt which flew over the head of first slip. Ben Wright struck two assertive boundaries in an over from Palladino, firstly pulling him for four before punching him through the covers. Cooke again edged Footitt past third slip and to the vacant third man position before four balls later he was clean bowled by the left-arm paceman. 39/4 then became 42/5 as another short ball from Footitt accounted for Wright who spared a rising ball into the wicket-keeper's gloves as the bowler continued to dismantle the visitor's batting.
The new ball bowlers were then rested as Mark Wallace greeted the introduction of Alex Hughes' seam bowling at the Racecourse End by despatching him through the covers, whilst Tom Taylor replaced Footitt at the City End. Allenby also fluently cover drove Hughes before Wallace edged Taylor through the slips for another boundary, followed by a more authentic four as he despatched the youngster through extra cover.
Wallace added another four to his tally as he cover drove Hughes whilst Allenby cut Taylor through backward point. But the latter gained revenge as next over Allenby edged to Wayne Madsen at first slip as Glamorgan lost their sixth wicket on 83, and one run later and in the penultimate over before tea, Taylor had Wallace caught behind.
Footitt finished with figures of 6/48
Evening update
With Glamorgan on 89/7 when play resumed after tea, Mark Footitt returned to the attack and was driven for four through the covers and backward point by Dean Cosker. With Derbyshire facing the prospect of losing bonus points because of their slow over-rate, David Wainwright bowled at the Racecourse End in a bid to hurry things along. After a series of dot balls in quick succession, he was swept for four by James Harris as the arrears were wiped off, followed by a rasping cut for four by Cosker.
Tom Taylor then replaced Footitt at the City End and he duly ended Cosker's stay at the crease as he bowled the Glamorgan number nine with the total on 118. With the Peakites over-rate out of the red, Tony Palladino replaced Wainwright before Owen clattered Taylor over the slip cordon for four before pulling the next ball for four to the ropes at mid-wicket.
This flurry of runs saw Footitt return and he ended Harris' innings as, with the total on 141, he edged a rising ball into the wicket-keeper's gloves. Owen continued to use the long handle with some effect as the ball got older, driving Palladino to wide mid-on for four before clipping Footitt to the ropes at backward square-leg, whilst Hogan biffed Palladino to long-off and extra cover for four, followed by a deft cut through backward point.
Hogan also straight drove Footitt for four but Wainwright then returned and with his second delivery he bowled Owen as Glamorgan were dismissed for 175 leaving Derbyshire with a target of 73 to win. Hogan was straight back in the action as with his first ball he dismissed Billy Godleman l.b.w. with a full length delivery as Derbyshire lost a wicket without a run on the board. Ben Slater then cover drove Harris whilst Madsen dropped anchor at the other end, with Derbyshire ending the day on 13/1.
