Glamorgan Cricket’s 2024 EDI Progress & Commitment

20 Dec 2024 | Community

2024 has been a year of continued progress for Glamorgan Cricket. It is a year that the Club shared the first Glamorgan Cricket Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) report and culminated in being shortlisted for the ECB Business of Cricket Award ‘Raising the Game’ EDI Award for 2024.

The Club continues to work to make the game as inclusive and diverse as possible focusing on three outcomes which are to make sure that:

  1. Equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded into the culture of our people.
  2. We have the most inclusive pathway for talented young people to fulfil their potential.
  3. We have the most diverse fan base possible.

Some of the highlights from this year include:

Plans & Strategies

  • Issuing a revised EDI action plan created in November 2024 following on from 2 previous iterations.
  • Publishing our first public report here

Training

  • Regular training given to staff
  • Gap analysis underway in Dec 2024
  • ECB Staff Survey used to track staff engagement with EDI principles

EDI sub committee

  • EDI sub committee meets before each Board meeting with a full copy of minutes and update to board.

Activities and events

Following the prayer element, participants were invited to grab a photo in the stands and enjoy cricketing activities in the Sport Wales’ building led by our Community Coaches.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Glamorgan Cricket and Cricket Wales for facilitating such a successful Eid prayer for the Muslim community in Cardiff. This meaningful event not only provided a space for our community to come together in celebration but also significantly strengthened the bond between us. The support and collaboration we experienced during this occasion have laid a strong foundation for our relationship. We deeply appreciate the commitment of Glamorgan Cricket and Cricket Wales to inclusivity and community engagement. It is our hope that we can build on this positive momentum, exploring more opportunities for collaboration in the future. Together, we can create initiatives that celebrate diversity and foster a spirit of unity within our communities.

We look forward to working closely with you, developing programs and events that bring people together and promote understanding and respect. Thank you once again for your support, and we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.

Volunteers:

  • We now have a diverse range of volunteers at major games in Sophia Gardens supporting the warm Welsh welcome. This year we had over 30 volunteers to call on many of which are ethnically diverse and or female. About 30% of these volunteers were from different ethnic backgrounds with volunteers from Nepal, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan who are now living in Cardiff. 25% of our volunteers were female.  The age range of our volunteers was from 18 to 70. Several of our volunteers had Additional Learning Needs and required some support.

Community Outreach -

  • Coaching Sessions at 8 Schools in the summer as part of CC ‘Food and Fun Programme’; challenging socio-economic deprivation.

Food and Fun is a school-based scheme that provides healthy meals, food and nutrition education, physical activity and enrichment sessions to children in areas of social deprivation during the school holidays.  Glamorgan Cricket’s Community Team have been involved in the programme since 2016. By delivering cricket sessions for children attending Food and Fun, they contribute to key areas of the programme - improving mental health and emotional well-being, improved school engagement and educational attainment, improved aspirations and physical activity. Case studies undertaken on Food and Fun, report that physical activity sessions lead to increased take up of local physical activity and sport provision, which was enabled by the signposting to local clubs and providers. They also report that children’s increased exposure to physical activity has provided opportunities to increase their connectedness to parents and family through doing sports together.” Judith Gregory: Rheolwr Busnes Arlwyo Addysg/Education Catering Business Manager

  • International Refugee Week – The club hosted a community event @ Grange Gardens for participants from Nepal, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Participants were also given tickets to attend T20 Blast. Several children have now engaged in clubs and pathway (see below).
  • Transition cluster festivals held in wards close to Sophia gardens and in areas of high levels of deprivation.
  • A group of Primary Schools took part in a collaborative scheme with Jo Cox Foundation around the concept of The Global Family of Cricket. This culminated in an inter-school softball cricket tournament in the Indoor School at the Sophia Gardens ground https://glamorgancricket.com/news/trowbridge-primary-school-win-the-jo-cox-trophy

Connecting with Diverse communities into the stadium

  • Connecting the community to the player pathway: Giving confidence to people:

“At Lisvane Cricket club, around 50% of our junior players are from ethnic minorities. They also make up the majority of players selected for representative cricket.  It is wonderful that these boys and girls support Glamorgan and dream of playing with a daffodil on their chest.  In large part, this is because they and their families have been made to feel part of the Glamorgan family at match days and whenever they connect with the club.” Ashleigh Crowter Junior Cricket Lead, Lisvane Cricket Club”

This event which has its finale at Sophia Gardens has the support of South Wales Police; Thomas Haigh Hate Crime officer says: -

“The Cardiff Community Cup is an engagement event which we are proud to be a part of. It gives us the opportunity to engage with communities and build new positive relationships with our communities. The Cardiff Community Cup has grown year upon year and it’s a very important event for our Policing teams to support. We would like to thank Glamorgan Cricket & Cricket Wales for allowing this engagement to continue each year.”
