Glamorgan Cricket supports the Great Winter Get Together

Glamorgan Cricket is thrilled to be continuing its support of The Jo Cox Foundation by taking part in the Great Winter Get Together.

Last summer, the Club supported the Foundation’s Great Summer Get Together by inviting schoolchildren and their families from the Vale of Glamorgan, plus groups of Afghan migrants, to the opening day of Glamorgan’s LV= Insurance County Championship match against Sussex at Sophia Gardens.

As a result of the resounding success of this initial venture, the initiative has expanded so that a group of Primary Schools in Cardiff and Llantwit Major are currently taking part in a collaborative scheme around the concept of The Global Family of Cricket which, during April 2024, will culminate in an inter-school softball cricket tournament in the Indoor School at the Sophia Gardens ground.

“During the course of the Great Winter Get Together, we have visited the participating schools to start the next phase of this exciting project,” said Andrew Hignell, the Heritage and Education Co-ordinator at Glamorgan Cricket. “All of the schools are creating display material and other content which promotes the values which are so dear to The Jo Cox Foundation, namely people coming together from so many diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, under the all-embracing umbrella of cricket.”

“It was great to hear about the children’s ideas for the material that will be on display in the Museum of Welsh Cricket in due course. Our visits also included a softball play and skills drills session, and it was very heartening to see the enthusiasm, even on a bitterly cold day in January, for playing cricket. This all augers well for the next stage of the project when the schools visit Sophia Gardens for the indoor tournament.”

The Jo Cox Foundation makes meaningful change on issues that the late Jo Cox MP was passionate about. The charity works in three areas: nurturing stronger communities, championing respect in politics and advocating for a fairer world. Underpinning this work is the understanding that we have more in common than that which divides us.
