Glamorgan face Leicestershire after thriller in Derby

4 May 2022 | Cricket

Head Coach Matt Maynard has named a 13-man squad for our LV= County Championship fixture against Leicestershire tomorrow.

Glamorgan welcome Leicestershire to Sophia Gardens after the scintillating draw against Derbyshire which went down to the last over of the game with all four results still possible.

Batter Billy Root comes into the squad for the first time this season after he struck a fine century for Ammanford in the South Wales Premier Cricket League (SWPCL) on Saturday.

Slow-left arm spinner Prem Sisodiya drops out of the squad and is replaced by medium-pacer bowler and lower-order batter, Andy Gorvin. Gorvin, who plays for St. Fagans in the SWPCL, could make his first-class debut for the Club after impressing in the 2nd XI fixture against Lancashire with unbeaten half-centuries in both innings.

Dutch seamer Timm van der Gugten misses out after suffering a hamstring complaint in the draw with Derbyshire.

The Welsh county sit in 4th place in the Division Two table, while the visitors are bottom and still looking for their first win.

View from the camp – Matt Maynard

“There are things to improve on as a unit. As a bowling unit, we need to work in pairs a little bit more. But we can’t fault the effort that everyone has put in, but sometimes we get a bit emotional and look for wickets too much.

“We just need to stay in there, in the game, and keep the ball just over the top of off stump and that kind of area. I think the way that Michael Hogan has led the attack for a good number of years, and he epitomizes that. We also have the class of Neser to look at as well.

“In regard to Leicestershire, we can’t look too far ahead, and we have to take it day-by-day and session-by-session and break it down that way. You can get complacent, or not show them the respect they deserve, because they have some fine players in their side.

“If we don’t show them the respect they deserve it could spell trouble, so we have practiced hard yesterday and today to get ready for the challenge.”

Head-to-head – Glamorgan v Leicestershire

Sophia Gardens has not been a happy hunting ground in recent times for Leicestershire with Glamorgan recording emphatic victories in their last two visits to the Welsh capital in September 2018 and again in September 2019. In the latter, a century by West Indian opening batter Kraigg Brathwaite allowed Glamorgan to set Leicestershire a target of 424 to win. They only made 132 as the Welsh county rounded off their home campaign with a rousing 291-run victory.

The game in 2018 saw Glamorgan win by 132 runs, thanks to 83 from Kiran Carlson plus feisty half-centuries from Craig Meschede and Timm van der Gugten. Michael Hogan also took 4-30 but the scenario nearly changed as Dieter Klein smashed 94 in a stubborn last wicket stand before van der Gugten ended the game and the 2018 season by trapping the South African l.b.w.
