Glamorgan finish Blast campaign at Canterbury

3 Jul 2022 | Cricket

Heading into Glamorgan's final match of the 2022 Vitality Blast against Kent Spitfires tonight, head coach Matt Maynard has named an unchanged 15-man squad.

Captain David Lloyd missed yesterday's loss to Essex Eagles with a calf injury he picked up against Worcestershire with batter Sam Northeast standing in for the north-Walian and it is likely he will do so again against the Spitfires.

Left-arm seamer Jamie McIlroy and batter Tom Bevan both made their T20 debuts for the Welsh county in the defeat. McIlroy was the pick of the bowlers against the Eagles, taking 2/32 in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

If selected, it will be Michael Hogan's last-ever T20 game before retirement at the end of the season. The evergreen Australian is already the Club's highest ever wicket-taker in T20 cricket with 114 and is currently joint fourth in the list of T20 wicket-takers in 2022 having taken 20 this season.

With his tally of 477 runs this campaign, Northeast is the fifth highest run-scorer in a T20 season for Glamorgan and needs 86 to beat the record of 562 set by Mark Cosgrove in 2010.

Both teams will be playing for pride tonight having already been eliminated from the running to reach the knockout stages of the competition. The Welsh county are in sixth place in the South Group, while the defending T20 champions are rooted to the bottom of the table.

Head-to-head – Kent Spitfires vs Glamorgan

As the list below shows, the two teams have met four times at Canterbury, with their most recent meeting in August 2019 being called off because of rain.

11 July 2010 - Kent won by 6 wickets
3 July 2011 - Kent won by 5 wickets
30 July 2017 - Glamorgan won by 25 runs
14 Aug 2019 - Match Abandoned

The Welsh county were the victors when the two teams met Canterbury during 2017 when half-centuries from Jacques Rudolph and Aneurin Donald plus some disciplined seam bowling during the second half of the Kent innings laid the foundations for the 25-run victory.
