Glamorgan finish white ball season at home to Northants

21 Aug 2023 |

Head Coach David Harrison has named an unchanged 14-player squad to take on Northamptonshire Steelbacks in Glamorgan's final Metro Bank One-Day Cup match.

Glamorgan defeated Somerset on the road last time out as Eddie Byrom scored a century against his former club. Kiran Carlson added 75 while Billy Root steered the side home with an unbeaten 74 to secure a two-wicket win at Taunton.

Unfortunately, the Welsh county can no longer qualify for the knockout stages of the campaign with only three teams advancing from each group. Glamorgan sit fourth in Group B, three points behind Gloucestershire who are occupying the qualifying position.

Despite looking like strong contenders to qualify for the knockout stages, Northamptonshire Steelbacks have suffered three consecutive defeats which also puts them out of contention for qualifying, with the top three all secured ahead of the final round of fixtures.

Tomorrow's encounter is the Welsh county's last white ball match of the season, with just three Championship matches remaining after the Steelbacks clash.

View from the Camp - Eddie Byrom

"I think had a couple of results gone our way in this competition, we'd probably be sat here still in a good position and possibly in the Quarter-Finals. That Warwickshire one in particular was one that we could have won.

"We wanted to turn up to these last two games and prove that we're still a good side and take some learnings from the games.

"We want to finish with a bang at home in front of our crowd at Sophia Gardens tomorrow".

Glamorgan had been victorious at the Wantage Road ground in 2021 after Hamish Rutherford (86) and Tom Cullen (58*) had starred with the bat for Glamorgan as the visitors amassed 295-6. Despite half-centuries from Ben Curran and Tom Taylor, Northants were pegged back by a waspish new ball spell from Michael Hogan (3/26) before Joe Cooke (3/32) filleted the lower order to clinch a deserved victory by 59 runs.

Glamorgan’s previous victory in List A cricket against the East Midlands side had been at Northampton during August 2008 when the Welsh county won a 40-over contest after Tom Maynard had struck a forthright 46, before some probing bowling by James Harris, Alex Wharf and Dean Cosker contained the home batsmen.
