Glamorgan Cricket played host as the Welsh National Women's team welcomed the MCC Women's team to Sophia Gardens on 22 April.
Winning the toss, the Welsh Women opted to bat first in the 50-over game.
Despite a rain interruption, they managed to post a competitive total of 201/6 in 37 overs. Opening batter Libby Thomas led the charge with a brilliant knock of 73 runs, providing a solid foundation, while Beth Gammon contributed a valuable 53 runs at number 3. With DLS setting the target to 231 runs in 37 overs for MCC, the stage was set for an intriguing chase.
MCC faced early setbacks in their pursuit of the revised target and struggled to build momentum throughout the innings. Although opener Lara Jones displayed resilience alongside Elyssa Hubbard, the increasing required run rate proved too daunting. The Welsh bowlers delivered tight spells, suppressing MCC's scoring opportunities and limiting them to a total of 132/8 after 37 overs, securing a commanding victory by 98 runs.
Standout performers with the ball for Wales included Emilia Wilson, who claimed 3 wickets for 25 runs on debut, and Ffion Wynne, who chipped in with 2 wickets for 6 runs.
Reflecting on the game, Eve Jackson, the number 3 batter for the Welsh team, said: "I am very proud to be playing here at Sophia Gardens today. We have been training for many years in the indoor centre and so to play outside on the international pitch really means a lot."
All-rounder Sara Phillips emphasised the importance of the game saying: “These games are essential to us as pre-season games preparing us for our league games.”
Aimee Rees, Head of Women and Girls at Glamorgan Cricket, added: “It's vital that the girls get the opportunity to play at the stadium. They come here all winter training in the indoor centre, and they walk past and really hope that they'll get the opportunity to play here.
It's an international stadium, they come and watch The Hundred, England and Glamorgan here, but giving them the opportunity to play here makes it real for them that they are good enough to play cricket at these venues."
