Glamorgan kick off One Day Cup campaign at Worcestershire

3 Aug 2023 | Cricket

Head Coach David Harrison has named a 13-player squad for our Metro Bank One Day Cup opener at Worcestershire.

Kiran Carlson will captain the side once again competition this season. Carlson first captained the one-day side back in 2021, where he led the side to victory in the One Day Cup Final against Durham at Trent Bridge.

The squad for the competition opener includes a nice blend of experience and youth with four players in line to make their List A debuts for the Club - Ben Kellaway, Ben Morris, Will Smale and Alex Horton.

Sam Northeast and Timm van der Gugten are both rested for the first two games of the tournament.

Colin Ingram is named as the one overseas player in the squad. Ingram has scored nearly 8,000 career runs in the format at an average of 48.03, scoring 50 half-centuries and 19 centuries across his illustrious career.

The Welsh county narrowly missed out on qualification to the Quarter-Finals of the One Day Cup last year as they finished a point short of third-placed Kent Spitfires.

Tomorrow's hosts, Worcestershire Rapids began their Metro Bank Cup campaign on Tuesday with a 42-run win against Durham at Chester-le-Street.

Asif Ali and Ben Cox both made half-centuries as the Rapids posted a first-innings total of 318/9, before dismissing Durham for 276 in 46.2 overs.

View from the Camp - David Harrison

"My mindset is the same as always and that is to try to win games of cricket for Glamorgan.

"We've done well in the competition for the last couple of years and I'm confident that the group of players we have can progress to the Quarter-Finals, but we know we've got a lot of work to do.

"The competition always provides an opportunity for young players to impress and we'll hopefully get to see that again this year".

Head-to-Head - Worcestershire Rapids vs Glamorgan

4 Aug 2002 at Worcester – Glamorgan won by 22 runs.
29 July 2003 at Worcester - Worcestershire won by 3 runs.
17 July 2005 at Worcester - Glamorgan won by 5 wickets.
5 May 2008 at Worcester – Worcestershire won by 7 wickets.
22 August 2010 at Worcester - Worcestershire won by 178 runs.
23 August 2022 at Worcester - Glamorgan won by 19 runs.

Glamorgan’s away match last year against Worcestershire saw Sam Northeast score a Club record 177*, whilst Billy Root made an unbeaten 113 as Glamorgan made a mammoth 356-3. Their efforts were not quite enough to see the Welsh county to a place in the knockout stages of the competition, but they laid the foundations for a victory by 19 runs.

This had been Glamorgan's first List A victory at Worcester since July 2005 when Vikram Solanki had made a polished half-century with the Rapids captain adding 91 for the first wicket with Stephen Moore who went on to post his maiden one-day hundred. However, their efforts were not enough to prevent a Glamorgan victory as half-centuries from Michael Powell, David Hemp and Sourav Ganguly saw the Welsh county to their target of 274, and all with an over to spare.
