Glamorgan look to bounce back against Essex Eagles

9 Jun 2023 |

Limited Overs Head Coach Mark Alleyne has named a 14-man squad for Glamorgan's Vitality Blast match against Essex Eagles at Sophia Gardens.

Ben Kellaway and Timm van der Gugten return to the Glamorgan squad as Dan Douthwaite misses out with an injury.

The Welsh county were beaten by Surrey last time out, but still remain in a strong position in the table as they approach the halfway stage in the competition, sitting in fourth place, with four wins from their six games.

Tonight's encounter sees 4th take on 5th in the table in a crunch match for qualification to the Quarter-Finals. Essex have also won four from six and come to Cardiff off the back of a 5-wicket win against Sussex Sharks on Tuesday.

Glamorgan are ahead of Essex Eagles in the table due to a slightly better net run rate, with tonight's match being a shootout for 4th place before the break, as attentions turn to the LV= County Championship on Sunday.

View from the Camp - Sam Northeast

"We'll bounce back on Friday, it wasn't to be on Wednesday night but we're looking forward to another game.

"It was nice to spend a bit of time in the middle. I wasn't at my fluent best but it was nice to get some runs and hopefully, that will kickstart my T20 season.

"We're in a good position in the competition, so we're going to have to regroup and keep going. We got in the huddle after the game on Wednesday and I think everyone realised that we've played a lot of good stuff so far so, one night against a very good side, we're not going to let that get to us.

"I'm sure we'll come back on Friday and it will be a different performance".

Head-to-Head - Glamorgan vs Essex Eagles

As the list below shows of their last six meetings in T20 cricket at Cardiff, the Eagles have not beaten Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens since June 2016 when 42 by Jesse Ryder and 41 from Tom Westley saw the visitors to a seven-wicket victory.

1 June 2016 - Essex won by 7 wickets
23 July 2017 - Match Abandoned
7 Aug 2018 - Glamorgan won by 6 runs
9 Aug 2019 - No Result
13 June 2021 - Glamorgan won by 7 wickets
2 June 2022 - Glamorgan won by 6 wickets

Last year at Sophia Gardens, Michael Hogan and Michael Neser each took three wickets against the Eagles before an innings of 44 by Sam Northeast underpinned their stroll to a six-wicket win. The margin of victory had been seven wickets at Cardiff in 2021, thanks to half-centuries by Nick Selman and Marnus Labuschagne with the pair sharing a match-winning stand of 110 in 13.1 overs.

Glamorgan were also victorious at Cardiff in 2018, when a forthright 89 by Colin Ingram, plus a feisty 53 from Graham Wagg saw the Welsh county to a six-run victory. Remarkably, this was also their first on home soil against the Eagles in the T20 competition, with the visitors having won five of their previous encounters at Sophia Gardens – in 2010, 2011,2014, 2015 and 2016.
