Nearly 3,000 school children took part in Glamorgan’s school visit programme from the end of May last year until December 2021.
In all, 2,855 pupils from 57 primary and secondary schools across South Wales participated in the scheme which looks to promote and engage school children with cricket and teach them about the history of the Club as well as many other facets about the Sophia Gardens ground and sport in Cardiff in general.
The visits are delivered by Glamorgan’s experienced community team and can be held at Sophia Gardens or the school itself.
Children visiting Sophia Gardens can go on a stadium tour besides enjoying skills-drills and softball play session in the Indoor School, as well as a talk in the Museum explaining cricket or on a range of other topics, several of which are closely related to the curriculum and the school’s specific learning schemes.
School based visits will see the community team bring cricket-related equipment into the school and engage the children in a series of stimulating and fun activities in their play spaces. Running parallel with these sessions are tailored classroom talks, again linked in with the school’s schemes of work and project-related activities.
“We’ve been delighted by the uptake from local schools for our educational packages,” said Andrew Hignell, the Club’s Heritage and Education Co-ordinator. “Despite the restrictions imposed by Covid, we had a lot of interest in the period from the end of May until July, as well as from early October when the National Cricket Centre re-opened.”
“There have been concerns about the physical and mental well-being of young people during the pandemic and we are delighted to be able to play our part in helping to ease these issues, as well as introducing and promoting the game of cricket, and Glamorgan CCC in particular. We have some exciting new activities planned for 2022 and we are looking forward to continuing this outreach and community work once the current restrictions ease.”
“Glamorgan Cricket gave us an immersive educational experience that held healthy living and strong citizenship values at its core.” - teacher, Severn Primary School
“What a great day we all had. Andrew and Paul were very welcoming and the talks and tour were very informative. Coach Brychan was great with the pupils and his lessons taught them some very valuable skills.” – teacher, St Mary’s Primary School
