While the first team must wait until Friday before their opening T20 fixture against Hampshire, the second eleven has already been in T20 action, playing two matches against Essex at St. Fagan’s on Monday.

Glamorgan won the toss in the opening match and elected to field. Despite reducing the home team to 29/2, some fine hitting from Wheater and Velani took the score up to 104 before Ruaidhri Smith broke the partnership, removing Velani for 44 from 33 balls.

Wheater continued to attack the Glamorgan bowling, supported well by Beard before falling for a tremendous 88 which included 5 6s.

At the end of their twenty overs Essex posted an imposing 179 with Smith the pick of the bowlers with 3/34.

The Welsh County were never really in the chase, losing constant wickets along the way. Neil Brand briefly threatened with 29 from 20 balls, and some lower order hitting from Ruaidhri Smith took the side beyond 100 but Glamorgan fell 52 runs short.

In the second game of the day, Glamorgan again won the toss but this time decided to bat first. Openers Craig Meschede and David Lloyd got their side off to a flyer scoring 45 runs from just 3.1 overs before Lloyd fell for 26 from 11 balls.

Glamorgan’s batsman continued going for their shots and while they lost regular wickets, Neil Brand (30) and Kiran Carlson (44) took Glamorgan to 167/8 from their 20 overs

Essex’s innings started badly and never recovered. Opening batsman Welch fell to Meschede from the first ball of the innings and when the Glamorgan bowler removed the dangerman, Wheater, in his second over, the innings was in tatters.

Meschede eventually finished with figures of 4/29 and was ably supported by the rest of Glamorgan’s bowlers, who all took one wicket, as they won the match by 41 runs and the sides finished with one win apiece.
