Glamorgan set for final match of the season

20 Sep 2021 | Cricket

Head coach Matt Maynard has named a 13-man squad for our final match of the season against Surrey at The Kia Oval tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Welsh county will be looking to end the Divisional stages of the LV= Insurance County Championship on a high after falling to defeats in their previous three games.

There are three new inclusions from the squad selected to face Gloucestershire last week, with wicket-keeper batsman Tom Cullen and all-rounders Joe Cooke and Callum Taylor all added.

View from the camp – Chris Cooke

“We had a big chat after the Gloucestershire game and it’s going to be a really big match for us.

“We’ve had a lot of good games this season, but we’ve had a shocking three weeks, so it’s just about focusing on what we’ve done well and try and take a positive result into the winter.

“We’ve had a few days to have some good, hard net sessions and we’ll give these last four days a big crack.”

Head-to-head – Surrey v Glamorgan

This will be Glamorgan’s first Championship match at Surrey’s headquarters since April 2014 – a game which saw the Welsh county win by ten wickets after Surrey had started the final day 121 runs ahead. However, a dramatic morning session saw eight wickets tumble for 31 runs in the space of 15.2 action-packed overs as Graham Wagg and Michael Hogan scythed through some limp resistance with high quality swing and seam bowling. Needing 153 in a minimum of 78 overs, Gareth Rees and Will Bragg duly rubbed salt into Surrey’s wounds by safely guiding their side to the target shortly after the scheduled tea interval, with both batters completing assured half-centuries.
