Glamorgan Sign Young Batter Callum Nicholls on a Rookie Deal

Glamorgan County Cricket Club is delighted to announce the signing of young batter Callum Nicholls to their playing squad for the 2025 season on a Rookie Contract.

Educated at Ysgol Garth Olwg in Pontypridd, the 20-year-old Academy product scored heavily through age-group cricket at the Club and topped the run-scoring charts in the South Wales Premier League last season for St Fagans CC.

Nicholls made his Glamorgan 2nd XI and Wales National Counties debuts in 2019 whilst still a schoolboy, and made his 1st XI league debut in the South Wales Premier Cricket League at a tender age of just 13, playing alongside Glamorgan great Matthew Maynard for St Fagans CC against Bridgend Town CC in 2018.

Away in New Zealand this winter to further his cricketing education, Nicholls scored over a thousand runs for Whangārei-based City Cricket Club’s 1st XI side Duracrete City Prems in the Premier Grade 2024/25 under the Northland Cricket Association.

Born in Llantrisant, Nicholls has already made one appearance for Glamorgan in the rain-affected NCCA showcase 50-over friendly against Herefordshire at Eastnor in 2023.

He also hails from a sporting family with his father Ryan having been a professional footballer for Cardiff City, Leeds United, Stromsgodset, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberystwyth and Carmarthen. His grandfather Dar Rees also played rugby union for Abertillery as well as rugby league for Halifax, Wales and Great Britain in addition to being coach of Bradford Northern.

Speaking on his contract, Nicholls said: “I’m delighted to have signed my first Rookie Contract with Glamorgan. I’ve grown up playing through the Pathway System and was on the Glamorgan Academy and it’s always been my goal to play for the Club. I can’t wait to get going with the squad this season.”

Glamorgan’s Director of Cricket Mark Wallace said: “It’s always nice when a player comes through your Academy and signs their first contract. Callum has always had the ability to score runs and again scored heavily last year in the Premier League for St Fagans CC.

“He’s continued that run-scoring in New Zealand this winter and we’re really looking forward to him joining up with us for pre-season and watching him take his first steps in the professional game.”
