Glamorgan Cricket is delighted that around 2,100 pupils and staff from a total of 54 schools and colleges will be attending Wednesday’s Vitality Blast T20 match between Glamorgan and Surrey at Sophia Gardens.
As well as many primary and secondary schools from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, there will be several schools and colleges from Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Monmouthshire, plus contingents from Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly, plus a large group of students from Bristol Collegiate School, who visited last year when Glamorgan played Gloucestershire and who enjoyed themselves so much that they are returning to Sophia Gardens this year!
“We have been delighted by the response to our free ticket offer this summer for accompanied school groups,” said Andrew Hignell, the Heritage and Education Co-ordinator of Glamorgan Cricket. “In 2022 around 4,200 youngsters came to two of our T20 Blast games on the free ticket offer. This year, the package has been extended to three games at our base in Cardiff and, in addition to those on Wednesday evening, there will also be over 2,000 coming to our matches at Sophia Gardens on both 21 and 23 June.”
“I know how much the players appreciated last year the support from over 4,000 pupils and students so, with almost 7,000 coming in 2023, I’m sure that it will give a massive lift to the Glamorgan team as they press for a place in the knock-out stages of the all-action competition.”
“It is also very gratifying for the members of the Club’s Community Department to see the fantastic response to this year’s schools' free ticket offer, given the outstanding work that the tour guides and coaches undertake with visiting groups, all-year round, to the Sophia Gardens cricket stadium on non-match days, as well as the excellent outreach work undertaken by Brychan Tudor and other community coaches from Cricket Wales when visiting schools for skills drills and softball play sessions.”
