Glamorgan travel to Taunton to take on Somerset

19 Aug 2023 | Cricket

Head Coach David Harrison has named a 14-player squad to take on Somerset in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Billy Root returns to the side after he was rested last time out against Gloucestershire. Dan Douthwaite returns to the Welsh Fire camp, while Will Smale drops out of the squad for the trip to Taunton.

After Worcestershire and Gloucestershire both picked up wins in yesterday's round of fixtures, the Welsh county can no longer qualify to the knockout stages of the competition.

This tournament, however, has provided the youngsters with plenty of first-team opportunities - none more so than Ben Kellaway, who has impressed in the tournament with 192 runs and 9 wickets.

Speaking about Kellaway, Captain Kiran Carlson said, "For the Club, it's a great place to be in that you've got a young guy coming through. Even though the competition might not be going as planned, I think the fact he's come through and done really well is a big box ticked for us in this competition.

"We've seen what he can do, we've seen that he does have the temperament and skills for first-team cricket and hopefully it's the start of a long and fruitful career for him".

Tomorrow's hosts, Somerset sit two places and one point below the Welsh county in seventh, coming off the back of a convincing win against Durham last time out.

View from the Camp - Kiran Carlson

"The guys in the lower order know that they're better than what they showed on Wednesday, but we're going to look to improve and come back tomorrow stronger.

"Although we may not be able to qualify anymore, we still want to win games of cricket for this Club, that's always our aim.

"It will be a tough test, Taunton is never an easy place to go but we'll look to put in an improved performance and come back tomorrow with the victory".

Head-to-Head Somerset vs Glamorgan

12 August 2014 at Taunton – Glamorgan won by 95 runs.
24 July 2016 at Taunton – Somerset won by 33 runs.
5 May 2017 at Cardiff – Somerset won by 140 runs.
20 May 2018 at Taunton – Somerset won by 83 runs.
21 April 2019 at Cardiff - Somerset won by 2 runs.
28 July 2021 at Taunton - Somerset won by 1 run.

The match two years ago at Taunton was reduced because of rain to 37 overs with Somerset’s acting captain Ben Green top-scoring with 87 to see the West Country side to 180-7. In reply, Glamorgan lost wickets at regular intervals with their last pair, Andy Gorvin and Michael Hogan needing to score ten from the final over bowled by Lewis Goldsworthy. The pair scored three singles against the left-arm spinner, but Hogan could not score off the fourth ball before swatting the fifth to mid-wicket for one. This left Gorvin needing to strike the last ball for six to win the game, and although the youngster made good contact, his lofted drive fell just short of the ropes at long-on with the ball bouncing away for four as Somerset celebrated a dramatic victory.

The game at Cardiff in 2019 was another nerve-jangling contest with a doughty last wicket stand between Timm van der Gugten and Lukas Carey appeared to be seeing Glamorgan to a famous victory, only for Azhar Ali to take a tumbling catch at mid-off to clinch a Somerset victory by two runs.
