Glamorgan are 251-8 at the end of the second day of their three-day friendly against Cardiff UCCE at Sophia Gardens after the students made 285 in their first innings.
Evening Report
Glamorgan had reached 135-3 at tea with Kiran Carlson and Billy Root having doubled the score during their unbroken stand of 69 for the fourth wicket. Carlson added an early boundary to his tally as he cover-drove Steve Reingold for four, before Root completed his fifty with a four to fine-leg from his 89th delivery. With the total on 157 Carlson departed for 48 as he swept Reingold into the hands of Tegid Phillips who was fielding at deep square-leg.
In his next over, the off-spinner also snared Chris Cooke who was caught at short-leg by Chris Gibson. Root then reverse-swept Sam Pearce when the leg-spinner returned to the attack but two balls later he departed l.b.w as Glamorgan lost their sixth wicket on 167. Dan Douthwaite announced his arrival at the crease by twice harpooning Pearce over mid-wicket for six. Callum Taylor also cover-drove Reingold for four as Glamorgan reached the 200-mark in the 55th over.
Andrew Gorvin returned to end Douthwaite’s merry spree as the all-rounder was caught behind with the total on 219 before Callum Taylor cover-drove and reverse-swept Tegid Phillips to the ropes when the young off-spinner entered the fray, but shortly afterwards he was unlucky to be run out backing up as Gorvin deflected a firm drive by Timm van der Gugten onto the stumps in his follow through.
Teatime Update
Glamorgan began the session on 34-0 with David Lloyd flicking Tim Wyatt to fine-leg for four but the Cornishman made the perfect riposte as next ball he trapped the Glamorgan vice-captain leg before. His departure saw Andrew Balbirnie join Nick Selman but their partnership proved to be a brief one as the Irishman also departed l.b.w. to Andrew Gorvin.
Billy Root began with a pair of boundaries through backward point before cover-driving Salman Saeed but with the total on 66 Selman became the third man to depart leg before as Gorvin claimed his second wicket. Having been joined by Kiran Carlson, Root then cover-drove Gorvin before his new partner did the same to Saeed.
AJ Woodland entered the attack at the River End and was nurdled for four to third man by Carlson who later cover-drove Tom Bevan for a pair of fours when the spinner entered the attack at the Cathedral Road End. Shortly before tea, Sam Pearce’s leg-spin was also introduced and he was also swept for four by Carlson.
Lunchtime Update
Cardiff UCCE resumed this morning on 226-6 after 84 overs with Andrew Gorvin joining Sam Pearce in the middle as Alex Simpson, who was not out overnight, was feeling unwell. With Glamorgan having taken the new ball, Pearce duly struck the day’s first boundary as he clipped Timm van der Gugten to backward square-leg before clipping the Dutchman to the ropes at fine-leg.
After a typically frugal spell from Michael Hogan at the River End, Jamie McIlroy had a trundle in tandem with Dan Douthwaite and claimed his maiden wicket for the 1st XI as Pearce, on 35, drove uppishly into the covers where Callum Taylor took a good catch diving to his right.256-7 saw the arrival of Tim Wyatt in the middle and he began with successive legside boundaries against Douthwaite before falling l.b.w. in McIlroy’s next over.
Tegid Phillips began by twice late-cutting McIlroy to third man before Gorvin cover-drove Douthwaite. With the total on 285 Phillips was caught behind against Douthwaite who then ended the innings next ball as Simpson briefly returned only to depart l.b.w. first ball. With twenty-five minutes batting before lunch, Nick Selman and David Lloyd began the Glamorgan reply with the former on-driving Salman Saeed in the opening over before the latter flicked Wyatt to square-leg. Selman added another pair of leg-side fours in Saeed’s second over before on-driving Gorvin for another boundary shortly before the interval.
