Glamorgan v Cardiff UCCE: Day One Report

29 Mar 2021 | Cricket

Cardiff UCCE are 226-6 from 84 overs at the close of play after being put in to bat by Glamorgan in their three-day friendly at Sophia Gardens.

Evening Report

The students had reached 157-2 at tea, with Lorenzo Machado five runs short of his fifty. Lukas Carey and Timm van der Gugten resumed the bowling duties after the interval with Machado cover-driving the former to complete his fifty from 102 balls before also benefitting from four overthrows as he scampered home after completing a quick single. Chris Gibson also cover drove Carey for four before his partner did the same.

The third wicket pair then stepped up the tempo with a series of quick singles before a cover-driven four by Machado against van der Gugten saw the students to 200. But the bowler gained revenge as later in the over he bowled Machado as he shouldered arms. Two runs later Callum Taylor trapped Gibson l.b.w before the score became 205-5 as the off-spinner bowled Tom Bevan.

Michael Hogan then returned at the Cathedral Road End and had an l.b.w. appeal upheld against AJ Woodland as the students stuttered to 214-6. Sam Pearce and Alex Simpson then played watchfully in the closing overs to take the students through to the close without any further alarm.

Teatime Update

With his side resuming after lunch on 74-1, Lorenzo Machado cover drove Jamie McIlroy who had a second spell at the River End whilst Timm van der Gugten returned to the attack after a frugal spell earlier at the Cathedral Road End. The Dutchman was twice driven through backward point by Steven Reingold before the opener on-drove and cover-drove successive deliveries to reach his fifty from 100 balls.

After Machado had pulled McIlroy for four, Callum Taylor’s off-spin was employed with Michael Hogan having another burst from the Cathedral Road End. Reingold pulled and square-drove Taylor to the ropes before edging the spinner just out of the reach of the slip fielder. But, with the total on 128, Reingold’s stay at the crease came to an end as he was bowled by Hogan, with Chris Gibson joining Machado who pulled a short ball from Taylor to the ropes at backward square-leg.

David Lloyd then had a spell in tandem with Dan Douthwaite with Machado seeing the students to the 150-mark by cover-driving the latter. Gibson also swatted Lloyd to the point boundary for four shortly before the interval.

Lunchtime Update

Harrison Ward, the Oxfordshire and England Under19 left-hander, opened the batting for Cardiff UCCE with Steve Reingold who has played for both Glamorgan and Middlesex 2nd XI, as Timm van der Gugten and Michael Hogan shared the new ball. Each delivered a probing spell as the two students played and missed in the overcast and chilly conditions before Reingold drilled Hogan through extra-cover for four. Both batsmen also outside-edged the bowlers to the vacant third man boundary

Jamie McIlroy, on his 1st XI debut, then replaced van der Gugten at the Cathedral Road End whilst Dan Douthwaite entered the attack at the River End and was cover-driven by Reingold for four. The opener also drove McIlroy to the ropes at mid-off as well as at cover point whilst his partner enjoyed a stroke of luck as an edge against Douthwaite dropped short of the slip cordon and sped away to third man.

A pull for four by Reingold against Douthwaite saw Cardiff UCCE to fifty in the 20th over before Lukas Carey entered the fray and was edged through the slips for four by Ward. Reingold then despatched Douthwaite through the covers but with the total on 64 Carey trapped Ward leg before for 34. Lorenzo Machado joined Reingold and cover drove Carey before flicking him to square-leg, whilst Hogan also returned for a brief pre-lunch salvo.
