17 Aug 2021 | Cricket

Durham will be Glamorgan’s opponents in the Royal London One-Day Cup final at Trent Bridge in a day-night contest on Thursday, 19 August starting at 1300 after Durham – who also won their group - defeated Surrey by five wickets in their semi-final at Chester-le-Street. (writes Andrew Hignell)

The final of the List A competition sees the two youngest counties in first-class cricket go head-to-head for the first time in seven years on one-day cricket. As shown in the list below of their last six meetings, Durham were the victors in their most recent game against Glamorgan in List A cricket, winning the game in 2014 at Sophia Gardens by 52 runs with Paul Collingwood taking 4/13 and Graham Onions 4/48, with the only resistance from the home batsmen coming from Jacques Rudolph who made 61.

14 Aug 2002 at Chester-le-Street – Glamorgan won by 3 wickets
10 Aug 2006 at Cardiff - Match Tied
15 Sept 2007 at Chester-le-Street – Durham won by 70 runs
10 June 2012 at Colwyn Bay – Glamorgan won by 15 runs
12 Aug 2012 at Chester-le-Street - Durham won by 59 runs
8 August 2014 at Cardiff – Durham won by 52 runs

The teams met twice in List A games in 2012 with Glamorgan winning the first game at Colwyn Bay by 15 runs after a fine new ball spell by paceman Simon Jones. The return contest at Chester-le-Street saw Mark Wallace complete his maiden one-day hundred, but it was in a losing cause as Durham recorded a 59-run victory.

Prior to that, the two sides had not met since September 2007 when Durham were victorious in a National League game at Chester-le-Street by 70 runs. They also met in 2006 in a day-night contest at Sophia Gardens with the game ending in a thrilling tie with Robert Croft and Ryan Watkins dismissed in the final over, delivered by Glamorgan old boy Mick Lewis.

This tied encounter has been one of 23 List A games which the Welsh county have played against Durham, with Glamorgan winning 16 and losing 6. Matthew Maynard hold the record for the highest individual innings against Durham, with the batting legend making an unbeaten 151 in the NatWest Trophy game at Darlington in 1991. Adrian Dale recorded the best-ever bowling figures, taking 6/22 including a hat-trick in the Sunday League encounter at Colwyn Bay in 1993 – Durham’s second year as a first-class county.

The game at Trent Bridge will be Glamorgan’s fourth one-day cup final following their appearances at Lord’s in 1977, 2000 and 2013. All three previous finals ended in defeat, although the Welsh county have collected one-day silverware having won the one-day league in 1993, 2002 and 2004.
