Glamorgan v Gloucestershire - match preview and team news

19 Apr 2014 | Matches
Glamorgan welcome Gloucestershire to the SWALEC Stadium for their opening LV=County Championship match of the summer at their Cardiff headquarters, with the contest starting on Sunday, April 20th at 11am (Gates open at 10am).
After their ten-wicket thrashing of Surrey at The Kia Oval, Mark Wallace and his team will be looking to make it two wins out of two as they meet Gloucestershire at the SWALEC Stadium. There have been six previous seasons when Glamorgan have won their opening two games in the County Championship - these were in 1948, 1953, 1960, 1985, 1993 and most recently in 1995 when the Welsh county, under Matthew Maynard's captaincy they defeated Somerset at Taunton by eight wickets in the last week of April, before beating Northamptonshire by three wickets at Sophia Gardens in early May.

Glamorgan met Gloucestershire at the Cardiff ground in the closing game of the 2013 season - a contest which the Welsh county won by eight wickets with Michael Hogan, their fiery Australian pace bowler claiming his 100th wicket in all cricket last summer. However, it was Jim Allenby who produced a match-winning performance with both bat and ball as the all-rounder made 85 in Glamorgan's first innings, before completing a match return of 7/47.

Their victory in September 2013 meant that Glamorgan have recorded four successive victories on Welsh soil against the West Country side. Besides last summer's victory at the SWALEC Stadium, Glamorgan defeated Gloucestershire by 26 runs at Swansea in 2012, as well as in their first Championship contest of the 2011 season at Cardiff when they were victorious by 189 runs.

Glamorgan's victory, on April 17th, 2011, was also their earliest-ever at their Cardiff headquarters, and last season, on April 20th, Glamorgan also defeated Worcestershire by ten wickets at the SWALEC Stadium to record their only other Championship victory in April at the ground.

You have to go back to May 2005 for the last time Gloucestershire recorded a Championship victory at the Cardiff ground with Chris Taylor making 176 as his side recorded a seven-wicket win after Glamorgan had been forced to follow-on.
