Glamorgan vs. Yorkshire - Match Report

17 Sep 2024 | Cricket

DAY 1 -

Morning Report:

The morning session proceeded shortly after Ben Morris received his debut cap as the 441th player for represent Glamorgan in first-class cricket. Despite a green pitch, the ball was coming onto the bat nicely, and it took a mammoth effort for Glamorgan bowlers to get the first wicket. One was quickly followed by two, as Andy Gorvin LBW bowled both the left-handed openers for Yorkshire, first Finlay Bean and then the captain Adam Lyth. However, Yorkshire would be quite happy with their start, getting a hundred runs in the first session, and losing just two wickets in the process. The umpires removed the bails and called for lunch at 12:33 as Yorkshire's score read 100/2 after 29 overs.

Teatime Report:

Glamorgan clawed their way back into the game after a steady start to the session by James Wharton and Jonathan Tattersall, who added 93 runs for the third-wicket partnership. Mason Crane broke the partnership thanks to a cautious and alert Chris Cooke behind the stumps. Andy Gorvin, who struck twice in the first innings, got the big wicket of Jonny Bairstow, who slashed the short ball straight to the safe hands of Ben Kellaway at point. James Harris joined the party after his well-directed short-ball went straight into the hands of Timm van der Gugten at deep fine leg. However, Yorkshire finished the session on a high, as George Hill and Dom Bess added 49 runs to the sixth wicket, with some attacking strokes on display. The visitors ended the session on 243/5.

Stumps Report:

Glamorgan bowled Yorkshire out with two overs to remain in the day, but only after Yorkshire got past 350 to eventually finish on 361. Andy Gorvin was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, as his spell of 4-67 managed to somewhat derail the Yorkshire attack. George Hill made a name for himself at the Welsh capital, scoring a counter-attacking 90 runs, batting around the tail. Timm van der Gugten got in on the act, taking two wickets of the Yorkshire tail to add to his impressive tally this season. Asa Tribe and Sam Northeast continued to open for Glamorgan for the third consecutive match, and managed to survive an over each from Ben Coad and Matthew Fisher as Glamorgan finished on 12/0 going into Day 2.

DAY 2 -

Morning Report:

6 wickets fell in the morning session for Glamorgan, as the Yorkshire new-ball bowlers Ben Coad and Matthew Fisher took all wickets between them in exceptional spell in the first hour. Matthew Fisher ended the session with 4 wickets and looked to trouble the Glamorgan batters almost every ball in his two spells across the session. Getting the wickets of Asa Tribe, Kiran Carlson, Chris Cooke and Timm van der Gugten, Fisher was well complemented by Coad who scalped the wickets of Sam Northeast and Ben Kellaway. Asa Tribe and Chris Cooke, in particular, would be gutted with their dismissals, both chasing a wide ball and managing to edge it. Yorkshire bowlers made full use of the slight help off the wicket with the new Dukes ball, but Glamorgan head coach Grant Bradburn would not be impressed with his team's batting in the first session Day 2.

Teatime Report:

A good recovery from the Glamorgan lower middle-order batters and tailenders brings the score to 229/8, trailing Yorkshire's first-innings score by 132 runs. Colin Ingram continued his best summer for the club with yet another half-century, with support of Mason Crane. Together, they brought up their fifty-run partnership for the seventh wicket, after which James Harris and Andy Gorvin continued on the momentum and brought up their fifty-run stand for the ninth wicket. The pitch stopped offering much help to the Yorkshire bowlers, but some quality strokes from Colin Ingram and Mason Crane, followed by James Harris and Andy Gorvin ensured Glamorgan avoided the follow-on.

Stumps Report:

Yorkshire dominated the day's play as they ended on 116/1 on stumps on Day 2, accumulating a massive 238-run lead with two days to go. Glamorgan bowlers failed to outfox the opening pair of Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean, who got their 100-run partnership in just the 22nd over, displaying a strong sense of intent to bring home the victory which would almost guarantee Yorkshire's promotion to Division 1 of the County Championship for next season. James Harris picked up a wicket in the penultimate over, trapping Adam Lyth LBW. A comfortable lead for Yorkshire as they would look to set Glamorgan a big target with the pitch flattening out, while Sam Northeast would look to use the morning to his advantage and hoping the bowlers would pick up quick wickets early on.

DAY 3 -

Morning Report:

An excellent session for the hosts as James Harris ran through the Yorkshire batters in the first hour in his 10-over spell. Picking the wickets of Finlay Bean, James Wharton and Jonny Bairstow, James Harris got a very special and deserved feat of picking 600 first-class wickets. Andy Gorvin complemented James Harris well in the morning, and that was followed by Timm van der Gugten, both picking up a wicket each. Despite Jonathan Tattersall and Dom Bess's counter-attacking 50-run partnership for the seventh wicket, Glamorgan would go into the break being the happier side. Yorkshire end the session on 224/6, leading by 346 runs.

Teatime Report:

Glamorgan bowlers made light work of the Yorkshire tail, bowling the visiting team out for 273 runs, thanks to Timm van der Gugten who weaved his magic on his second spell of the day. James Harris completed his five-wicket-haul to go along with his 600th first class wicket, capping off an excellent comeback game at Sophia Gardens with the ball after an injury spell. After being 20/2 losing star batters Sam Northeast and Colin Ingram early on, Asa Tribe and Kiran Carlson held the fort together and managed to enter the dressing room for tea with a 50-run stand for the third wicket. A massive evening session coming up, which could easily decide the outcome of the match.

Stumps Report:

The deciding session of the match went towards the visitors Yorkshire, who managed to pick up 5 wickets in their conquest of securing promotion to Division 1. Ben Coad was the star of the show for the travellers, as he picked up 4 wickets to derail the Glamorgan chase and fade any hopes of a win ahead of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup final on Sunday. Asa Tribe, the young batter from Jersey, scored his maiden half-century in first-class cricket after being given a lifeline from Jonny Bairstow who dropped the Jerseyman early on in his innings. Yorkshire close in on yet another victory in the division, as Glamorgan will look to take the positives tomorrow morning and Sunday.

DAY 4 -

End of Match Report:

Yorkshire made light work of the Glamorgan tail and Asa Tribe, taking the final three wickets in the opening hour. Asa Tribe's defence was broken by Matthew Fisher, after which James Harris decided to take the aggressive route, before losing his stumps to a Jordan Thompson delivery which came back into the right hander, which meant James Harris missed his half-century by a run. Yorkshire won the game by 186 runs to push their name for the promotion race along with Middlesex. Glamorgan will look to dust themselves off and be ready for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup final this Sunday at Trent Bridge.
