Gloucestershire were 197-3 from 63 overs when snow and sleet brought an early finish to play on the final day of their friendly against Glamorgan at Bristol, with the game ending in a draw.
Close of Play Report (Day Two)
Gloucestershire had reached 154-3 at tea with the two Ben’s – Messrs Charlesworth and Wells – facing James Weighell and Dan Douthwaite when played resumed under glorious sunshine. Having been at t.he crease for three and a half hours, Charlesworth came out of his shell to play a pair of flowing cover drives against each bowler, before pulling Weighell to the ropes to complete his fifty from 164 balls.
Wells, who had benefitted before tea from an overthrow for four, then took a leaf out of his partner’s book by cover driving Douthwaite. The cloud cover however increased and another downpour of sleet and snow sent the players scurrying from the field after 63 overs as the contest ended in a draw with the West Country side on 197-3.
Afternoon Update (Day Two)
Gloucestershire went to lunch on 82-1 during which there was a snow shower briefly at the Nevil Road ground, leading to a delayed resumption. When play began ten minutes late, Michael Hogan had a second spell in tandem with Dan Douthwaite. Tom Lace carved the latter through point for four but after four overs the snow returned as the players left the field, with a further fifteen minutes playing time lost.
When play resumed Lace cover drove Hogan for four before doing the same to Douthwaite as Gloucestershire reached the 100-mark in the 38th over. Timm van der Gugten and James Harris then had their second spells as Lace completed his half-century from 75 balls before retiring. Iain Cockbain replaced him but only had a brief stay at the crease as three runs later he edged the Dutchman into Horton’s gloves.
Charlesworth continued his patient accumulation before opening his shoulders to pull Harris to mid-wicket whilst his new partner Jack Taylor upper cut the bowler over the slips. But Harris had the last laugh as later in the over he trapped Taylor l.b.w. Andrew salter and James Weighell then had a short spell in tandem up until the tea interval.
Morning Report (Day Two)
Glamorgan declared on their overnight total of 329-6 from 68.2 overs so it was Gloucestershire’s batters who made their way to the middle this morning at a blustery and chilly Bristol. Michael Hogan and James Harris shared the new ball as Ben Charlesworth and George Scott began the home team’s innings with Alex Horton behind the stumps for the first time this season. Hogan found the edge twice of Scott’s bat with the ball bouncing well short of the slip cordon and scuttling away for four runs.
Scott’s third and fourth boundaries were in front of the wicket as he punched Harris through mid-off and extra-cover. He repeated the blows a couple of overs later against Harris as Hogan completed a series of four maidens to Charlesworth who eventually opened his account in the 12th over by cover-driving Harris.
James Weighell and Timm van der Gugten then had a spell in tandem with Charlesworth pulling the former before Scott pulled him for six. However, Scott’s innings ended next over as he feathered a ball from van der Gugten into Horton’s gloves. 59-1 saw Tom Lace join Charlesworth who had a life shortly afterwards as he edged the Dutchman through the slip cordon. Lace also opened his account by nurdling David Lloyd to the vacant third man position before Andrew Salter had a spell at the Ashley Down End prior to the interval.
Evening Report
Glamorgan had reached 236-6 by tea after James Weighell had lofted Ryan Kilminster for six over long-on in the last over before the break. He then clipped the first ball after the interval for four to fine-leg as Ben Charlesworth returned to the attack before biffing the young spinner through mid-off and wide long-on for further boundaries. Dan Douthwaite also drilled Charlesworth through mid-off for four before Weighell pulled a full toss from Kilminster over mid-wicket for six before hitting another maximum before square-leg as he galloped to a 49-ball fifty.
Douthwaite also opened his shoulders to club a four and six against Charlesworth as Glamorgan reached the 300-mark in the 65th over as light rain started to fall. Weighell then swept Kilminster for another six but the precipitation soon intensified as the umpires took the players off the field with the Welsh county on 329-6.
Afternoon Update (Day One)
Glamorgan resumed on 134-3 after Andrew Salter had been stumped off the final ball of the morning session with Kiran Carlson joining Sam Northeast. Carlson opened his account with well-executed cover drive against Dominic Goodman before Northeast duly completed his sublime fifty from 64 balls with an on-driven four followed by a single to fine-leg.
Northeast also pulled Will Naish for four before Carlson greeted the return of Shaw by punching him off the back foot through extra-cover. But the bowler had the last laugh as, with the total on 161, Carlson edged into the wicket-keeper’s gloves. Chris Cooke joined Northeast and pulled Will Naish for six before striking Shaw for a pair of fours through the off side in the seamer’s seventh over. Northeast then pulled Naish for four before Cooke repeated the stroke against the young all-rounder for six.
Having batted for an hour after lunch, Northeast retired unbeaten on 63, with Billy Root joining Cooke with the total on 194-4. However, his stay at the crease proved to be a brief one as seven runs later he edged a drive against Luke Charlesworth and was caught by a diving Tom Lace at third slip. Dan Douthwaite became Cooke’s new partner and he began with a flowing cover drive against Charlesworth.
Cooke also on-drove Charlesworth for four before pulling Ryan Kilminster when the young left-arm spinner entered the fray but, with the total on 220 Cooke was bowled by a delivery from Charlesworth which appeared to keep low. James Weighell then joined Douthwaite for the overs leading upnto the tea interval.
Morning Update (Day One)
Having opted to bat first, David Lloyd opened the batting with Andrew Salter as Josh Shaw and Dominic Goodman shared the new ball. Lloyd was in assertive mode clipping Goodman to the ropes at square-leg and long-off before Salter flicked Shaw for four to square-leg followed by nurdles to the boards at third man against each bowler. He followed this with a booming cover drive against Goodman whilst Lloyd unfurled a fierce square-cut against Shaw.
The club captain then struck Goodman for four and six in consecutive deliveries to and over the ropes at square-leg as Glamorgan reached the 50-mark in the tenth over. Ajeet Dale and Luke Charlesworth then had a spell during which Dale removed Lloyd l.b.w. for 39, as Colin Ingram joined Salter with the total on 58. The left-hander opened his account with an assured punch for four off the back foot against Dale but next ball he got a leading edge and chipped the ball back into the hands of the former Hampshire seamer.
68-2 saw Sam Northeast make his way to the middle and he began with crisply struck fours through the offside against Dale who was replaced by Ben Charlesworth at the Ashley Down End. George Scott also had a spell at the Pavilion End and was plonked over the ropes at mid-wicket by Salter for a huge six before Northeast pulled successive deliveries from Charlesworth to mid-wicket for four. Salter also on-drove him for four before Northeast flicked Scott to fine-leg for four, followed by a laconic glide through point for four against the same bowler.
