Last Saturday was quite literally a glorious day for the Gloucestershire side who lifted the Royal London One-Day Cup at Lord's with a narrow six-run victory over Surrey. As far as the Championship is concerned, the West Country side currently lie in 6th place, seven points behind Glamorgan in fifth spot, who are just a single point behind fourth-placed Northamptonshire who moved ahead of the Welsh county by securing an additional point in last week's drawn match at Wantage Road. Northamptonshire meet Division Two leaders Surrey in their final match of the summer so there is plenty to play for in terms of final positions in the Division Two table.

Glamorgan's last visit to Bristol in 2014 saw the game end in a high-scoring draw as the Welsh county declared on 615-7 after hundreds from Jacques Rudolph and Ben Wright, supported by fifties from Will Bragg, Chris Cooke, Jim Allenby and Ruaidhri Smith. A similar scenario unfolded in 2013 when the two sides met at the Nevil Road ground with Murray Goodwin and Jim Allenby completing centuries for the Welsh county, before Michael Klinger and Alex Gidman followed suit for the West Country side.

This was in stark contrast to the game in 2012 at Bristol which was abandoned without a ball being bowled, but Gloucestershire were victorious in the match in 2011, with some probing seam bowling by Jon Lewis, Will Gidman and David Payne seeing their home side record a five-wicket victory.

Glamorgan's last win at Nevil Road in a four-day contest came in a rain-affected contest in April 2008 when they were victorious by 114 runs after David Hemp had completed half-centuries in each innings and Jason Gillespie had delivered a feisty spell of seam bowling.

The two sides have already met this summer in the LV=County Championship with the game at Swansea being won by Gloucestershire by seven wickets.
