Great to see Cooky's character and leadership - Maynard

Glamorgan Head Coach Matt Maynard praised the 'character and leadership' of Club captain Chris Cooke, who hit a third 4th innings half-century in as many knocks as the Welsh county drew their Bob Willis Trophy clash against Gloucestershire at Sophia Gardens.

With the game in the balance, skipper Cooke scored a defiant 59 not out, after his previous knocks of 82 (vs Somerset) and 74 (vs Worcestershire) and Maynard believes that alongside Timm van der Gugten, the way the pair played was 'very pleasing'.

'It's mixed feelings after that game," said Maynard. "I'm delighted for the skipper and the way he played, but for that to be our highest partnership of the game is a little bit disappointed, so it's a bit bittersweet.

"It's great to see the character and leadership of the captain to play like that, as well as Timm who dislocated his finger in the field, and to come back from hospital and play like that was very pleasing."

Glamorgan scraped a second consecutive draw, but Maynard wants to see more from his charges as they look to build in the final two games of the Bob Willis Trophy for the 2021 season and for the upcoming Vitality Blast.

"We've still got a long way to go. We know that and we are under no illusion. It's going to be a lot of hard work and there'll be a few more days where the beard gets even whiter.

"Gloucestershire did bowl really well as a unit throughout the entire game, it was a tough pitch to score on and both sides, especially the seamers, bowled well out there. You have to fight through that, put certain shots away that aren't applicable for that pitch and you can't play the same on every surface.

"Every game is a learning curve. We could have made it a lot easier on ourselves."
